Im thinking about doing my first sprint pretty soon and was wondering what kind of time you guys are putting down on the bike in 15 miles. Next week I will be buying either a new rode bike or a used tri bike. Right now im riding a Giant mtn. bike. Ive been riding for 3 months now. On the mountain bike ive been riding the 15 miles in 53-58 min depending on the wind. Am I anywere close. Hopefully the new bike will take alot off of that. Thanks

It depends on the course, if it's flat I can go about 48-50 minutes pretty regularly.  If it's hilly, I'm around 55 minutes or so.

I don't have anything flat around me. One of my regular loops is 14 miles with 1200 feet of climbing, I generally do that in 56 minutes if I'm just cruising. I've never raced it to see how fast I can do it... usually I have specific intervals to do (I have a coach) so I only do the loop when I have a 1 hour "ride how you feel" workout.

You could easily do a sprint distance with that and a road bike will get you more speed but probably not as much as you think (at least, that was my experience). I switched from a mountain bike to road bike before my first tri and thought it was well worth it -  the big differences were comfort and hill climbing on the roadie.

I think the biggest  factor that you have no control over on the bike in the tri is how fast your swim is and your forced to be passing people of the bike.

To answer the question "Am I anywhere close?"

To winning: No. On a flat course you'll need to do that distance in 35-38 minutes and back it up with a respectable run.

To being dead last: No. Every sprint tri I've done has had many people biking at less than 15 mph.

The fat tire category of the sprint I did yesterday (with a 15 mile bike) had the best bike split at 54 minutes. On a road bike, you'll probably pick up to somewhere in the middle of the pack.

My las sprint had a 15 mile bike section and I did it in 43 and some change.

This is on a tri bike and the bike part is my strongest leg of the race and that would have been my 12th triathlon. The course was soft rolling hills.

What this tells you is nothing. Your first race should be about you putting down a good effort and establing a baseline that you can look to improve upon.

Good luck and enjoy the ride!

Well I'm buying a specialized tri bike. My 3 mile run average is 24min and I swim good so hopefully I will be in the top 50%

Flat course probably low 40's for me.  I can do it in around 45 where I live most of the time if I push it some.  Your time will not be near the front of the pack but you should be no where near the bottom.

The main goal for your first tri is to get out, meet people, learn the process and have fun.  As you get hooked, you will undoubtedly improve your times.  Time differ greatly depending upon the course and the field.  What I think you will find is as you push yourself on your times, you will probably give up more time in the transition areas.  This is where getting used to a tri helps.  My 2 cents, if your planning for a race that means a lot to you then sign up for a throw away first to get the cobwebs out.  Just start the process and times will follow.

Too many people get caught up on the trying to ride 20mph, the important thing is you can ride 15 miles, so your training and your hard work has done the job.  Have fun during the race, take it all in, remember, this is the reward for all the hard work.

None of us know how fast we'll go in a race until we get the first one done without issues.  I can work a hard gear and get a fast split in a 15 mile ride, but that says nothing if I don't get out of the swim, or that big gear burns my legs up so I can't run.  What I like about tris is that you get to learn so much from each race, you learn about your self, your equipment, and where you can improve.

For your first tri, give it all you got, enjoy finishing, and then start pulling apart where you can improve and shave off time.  The only thing about my splits that will help you is: over 2 years I've improve about 2.5 miles per hour on the same bike and set up with learning from each race after my first one.

I ride mostly hilly courses. Only been riding a couple months.  I average ~15mph.

I lack serious strength, so I just die on the hills.  I don't have the gut's to let the speed get up there on the down hills yet either.

I looked up the 27 mile OLY I just did and saw that we had around 2000ft of climbing.  In contrast, I looked at the Austin, TX 70.3 and saw that on their 56 mile bike, they have <1000ft of climbing.  Figuring out average mph on a board with people from so many parts of the country could be tough, especially as a Clyde.  I don't know about you but I can hang with people on flats and downhills but I get burned working my extra weight uphills.  This is my first year doing this stuff so hopefully that goes away as I get more time on the bike.

Just know that answers are relatvie and even if you are not as fast as you want to be at first, get that baseline so you have a target to improve upon.

Just sign up for a sprint and do it. I only had 2 months of training before my first sprint. I had been powerlifting competitively and wanted a change for awhile. I bought a cheap Schwinn road bike ($300) and went and competed.
It is all about putting up some numbers and finishing. Then you have something to improve on.
Don't wait for the "right time", just do it.

I was training on a hybrid for a triathlon that had an 18-mile bike route. While I was training, I was averaging 77-78 minutes for 18 miles with about 1100 feet of climbing. In the actual triathlon, I did it in 63 minutes. I think it was a combination of factors that resulted in the huge improvement:
  • My training was more challenging than the actual tri course (700 feet of climbing)
  • I was motivated by the people around me
  • adrenaline
So you never really know how you're going to do until you're in it!

I did my first Sprint this summer, I am a new swimmer (and hugely afraid of the water) and hate running, but LOVE the bike.  I just looked up my times... DAMN swim took me 23 min, but I smoked the bike course, only 2 big hills, but of course the first one is RIGHT out of t1, like 30 feet...LOL, and I did the bike in 39min.  Then the run was a flop, at like 42 and change...  But looking back I could have went faster, but was not sure if I would run out of steam or not.

I really thing a road bike will help alot.  My average times on the bike for the course (Tri was in home town) was about 44-48 min, but I am always goinf AFTER work, or AFTER the wife makes me mow the lawn... but the Ooooooo of the Tri helps a ton too.

So I am running at least 2 times a weel, and will swim 3 times when the water warms up in spring.

I saw this post last week and tried it on my Sunday ride. I clocked in at 54:26 for the 15 miles in the rain and wind. Not a bad ride, was alone with my IPOD and just kept grinding, finished a total of 22 miles, my longest ride to date (just getting started).
