Subject: Anyone else doing the T-Rex Tri on 8/13?

This will be my debut triathlon, and I'm scared to death! I'm a seasoned marathoner (albeit not very fast!), and I just recently bought a brand new Giant OCR1W, and I"m itchin' to get her into a race.

Obviously, the swim intimidates me, but I'll do the best I can....

I'm a bit confused about attire...I just bought a great new TYR suit, but what do I wear for the rest of the race?

Sorry...I know, I'm such a newb!

Welcome Lisa!

I am doing T-Rex also. I am new to tri's this year but have, in the past, slowly ran a marathon. This will be my 4th tri, be careful they can be addicting. The swim still freaks me out also. Have you been out with the Running Fit group at all for the OWS on Thursday nights?

As far as clothing-you swim basically in whatever you are going to wear for the whole tri. You'll see people do the tri in their bathing suits, in one-piece tri suits, in two piece tri suits, If you wear a swim suit, you can throw some shorts on in T1 and you are good to go.

You'll find a lot of Runner's World BF people in this group-Haven't I seen your avatar there in the past? Its a great group and everyone is willing to help. There are usually groups of us that train together so please join in! jo

Lisa, Welcome! I too am doing T-rex, and it will be my 5th.

I as well have on OCR1W - you will love it on this course.  The course is a little hilly towards the northwest after the turnaround, but the OCR1w can handle it no probs!

If you haven't already, I would suggest looking into getting out there (ILRA) this upcomming Thursday night - as Jogo said RunningFit trains in Kent lake at 6:30PM, then does a nice bike afterwards.  It will be perfect for you to try out your clothing to see what works for you.

Good luck!

I will be at the T-Rex tri as well....my third tri of my rookie year.  It should be a fun one.  I'll be out at Island Lake on most days before noon up until the race.  Let me know if you would like someone to train with out there.

Hi Lisa,

Welcome to the party!

I will be doing my 4th ever, 3rd this year at the T-Rex. I hope you can join us next Thursday.

The advice is good to wear your clothing out there to see how it all feels. Better to find out before the race if something is feeling funny, or worse, rubs you the wrong way!

See you at ILRA,

Trish

Lisa,

Welcome to BT Michigan!  Your face is very familiar as I was a Runner's world Forum poster for awhile, too... I think I've even posted on your blog before!    (small world, eh?).  Anyway, the biggest thing you need to practice before the 13th is RELAXation!  Seriously, the tri scene is even more friendly than the runner world (IMHO) if you can believe it.  Practice what you'll do on race day and plan NOT to change after the start of the race... too much trouble.  If you have a tri suit, you can bike and run in it and you'll be totally set.

You're going to have a blast!

I personally think the Greyhounds and the BT squad are way cooler to train with than the Running Fit peeps, but that's just me.

Seriously, we have people of all skill levels that swim, bike and run starting from 5:30 to 6:30ish on Thursday nights and usually end up finishing training by 8:30. It may be worth shooting down US 23 now and then to jump in on the fun.

There are a lot of us RWF peeps here too.

Good luck in your race Lisa and I'll be looking for a RR talling all about it.

I wish I could do the T-rex but I only have so much to spend on races and gear so I have to pick my races well. T-rex just did not make the cut this year. Next year it may.

I'll Be there.

Good Luck Lisa, and if you have finished a marathon, this will be a piece of cake. I didn't start running at all untill last October, and I managed to finish.

Definately come a do some training with the BT folks. It'll get you used to open water swimming.

Thanks so much for all the offers to come and join you folks!! Unfortunately, I will be out of town beginning Thursday, so I'll just have to bring my A-game to the tri.

I just ordered some Pearl Izumi Tri Shorts, but I'm a little lost as to what to wear on top. Anyone have links to places that sell tri bras or tops? I'm willing to wear that, as long as it keeps the 'girls' reigned in.

Hey, for those who have done this tri before, will I need a bib belt? Do we get body marked? Just trying to figure out if I need to buy a belt....

Thanks...

Sorry to butt in here (Lisa: I see you still don't have an answer to your questions), but...I've searched the Race Schedule and can't find this "T-Rex" Tri. Where is it held?

Thanks!

Here is a link to one of the plethora of websites that have tri tops, I would think that any of these would hold the "girls" in, but you don't have to do that on our account...:-)

Lisa,

You can use a running sports bra if you want to... just try it out wet so you know it won't chafe.  You can buy tri-tops (check the link posted above) or sierra trading post has them cheap sometimes.  I've found that the support in tri tops (which often come with a shelf-bra) are not nearly enough for running so I wear one of my running bras underneath one without the built in bra.  ps. there are also other great threads on this with specific recommendations in "tri-talk" forum and the gear review forum).

You can get a bib belt if you want, it will save you some time.  You will get body marked but the bib is still required for the run.  Those with no belts will have them pinned to a shirt and throw it on for the run.

See you there!

Thanks Dave!

Ah yes, one of my MTB races (www.tailwind.net) was there earlier this summer. I did the Torn Shirt Trail the week before, but the race was on the Murray Lake loop.

The info re: T-Rex says that the bike and run will be on "paved paths." Will there be enough room? I am strongly considering this race since it will probably be my last chance for a solo tri this summer.

Stop worrying and just sign up, you know you want to!!

Its a first year race, so if you really want specific answers you'll have to call Running Fit.

ETA: from the website "Kent Lake swim, paved park road bike course, paved path run course".  i.e. The bike will be on the road so we'll have plenty of room.  The run path is also quite nice, so no worries.

I'm really tempted, I mean it's all about the cool shirt, isn't it?

I'm gonna see how I do Sunday in Sylvania, and may just join in for fun.....

This whole idea reminds me of when I raced in Belgium and France. We had Wednesday night races that were a big deal in the little towns like Charlevoix. Spectators packed the streets to watch us race- the bars, sports bars kind of, were full of people coming out to watch the evening races.

They had betting on the athletes, legal betting, and they did a brisk trade. Before the race the spectators would come and watch us get ready in the "vestiare", or the area where the racers dressed for the race. Based on what they saw they would place their wagers on the fittest looking athletes. They paid us to do the races, anywhere from about $50 to $200 USD depending on the turn out. It was all taken very seriously. Big fun.

Those days were huge- I guess I'm getting old, but to me getting ready for a race in the evening on a weekday harkens back to that...

Does anyone know if the bike was actually 12 miles?  I know it was shortened from original 12.4 miles.

Thanks

My computer measured 12, did not measure against mile markers though.
