Veteran  513 |  Subject: Road Bikes and us bigger guysHey everyone. I am looking into getting a road bike for Xmas and was wondering about if it could stand up to the additional weight of myself. I am about 235-240 (probably the later after Thursday) and was looking to get a basic road bike with a carbon fork. Would this be okay? I just don't want my investment to be ruined after a few short rides. I know it is a dumb question, but I had to ask before I dropped a few hundred on a bike. Thanks |

New user 97  Virginia | Subject: RE: Road Bikes and us bigger guys I am 6' 2" 225lbs and i ride a entry level rode bike with a carbon fork. I have been riding it for 3 years. Only problems i had were the wheels. I had to replace those after 6months, spokes kept becoming loose and breaking. i had to tighten them for EVERY ride. I am not sure if this was due to my weight or just the cheap wheels they put on the entry level bikes to cut cost. I did invest in a decent set of mavic wheels and they havent become loose since. |

Expert 1149  CenTex | Subject: RE: Road Bikes and us bigger guys Absolutely! Go get a bike. I'm 6'5", 245 (and decreasing) and have been riding for ~8 years. In that time I've had 2 bikes, both with aluminum frame and carbon forks. Ditto what was said about wheels. You need to make sure that the wheels are designed to handle the extra weight and stress that your size will put on them. Neuvation makes nice, reasonably priced wheels that will support those of us that are gravitationally challenged. Good luck and get out and ride! |

Rides good and handles my weight just fine. Kevin You will want to get the bike back to the LBS after 100 miles or more and have them check on the spokes and wheels setup. More than likely they wheels are machine built and are not very good. How many spokes in the rear???? |

I rode an OCR1 for about 5 years, until I wrecked and broke a weld. Rode the stock wheels for most of that time, until I voluntarily upgraded. |

Agreed, wheels are what breaks for Clydes. 24 spoke is okay but get some spare drive side spoke for the rear wheel and non-drive if they have them. The drive side are the usual ones to go. I've ruined Mavic Ksyriums, Performance Titans and Velocity's in less than 1 thousand. The Neuvation wheel is pretty good and they send you extra spokes. But Neuvation only has 24 spokes. My Neuvation broke a spoke after 600 miles but the spare went in and it was fine for another 500 miles and is now a back up. I've been riding a pair of used Velomax Circuits (28 spoke rear) for the last 1500 and they've been good. Easton bought Velomax. You can get Easton Circuits for ~ 300 on ebay. My recommendation would be for a 28 spoke rear wheel or higher. ENJOY your new bike! |

I am 6'5" and a bit, and I was 290, just came down under 280 (yeah!!). I have a Trek 2.1, a 2009, carbon fork and stays, stock everything, and have had no problems. I did have a guy in a car force me into the seam between the curb cement and the pavement, and it got the rear a touch out of true, LBS fixed it up at no charge. No other problems at all.... I also have a Specialized Allez Sport that I got used, and I log miles on it with the stock wheels with no problems... I am of course cautious of ruts seams and bumps.... Just FYI. |

Master 1993 Riverside, IL | Subject: RE: Road Bikes and us bigger guys Well...I'm sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong about this, but...I don't think you can just "install" extra spokes on a wheel. You would have to have them custom built with 32 or 36 spokes. I have a clyde riding buddy (he is 6'3", 245lbs) and he rides a Trek 1500 SLR...but he swapped out the flimsy stock Bontrager wheels for a set of Velocity Deep-V's and had them built up with 36 spokes, both front & rear. He hasn't had to true his wheels for 2 years, and not a single broken spoke in that time, either. |

Only problem has been a busted wheel where the spoke was connected. This was going over a really bad pothole though. The bike still rides as new as far as I am concerned. |

Very comfortable and the the geometry is less agressive. Very comfortable ride. Shimano 105 components, carbon fork and seat stand. I got a 2009 for $1300 and had a $350 credit. |

Im looking at the Synapse Carbon 5 right now. Was offered a great deal for a new one at 1350 in my size. Im liking the more comfortable geometry and hope to get a ride on one soon. Having lower back surgery I think I need a little more of the upright seating until I lose a few more lbs |
