I seem to be a mosquito magnet. I try not to go out at dusk and sure I can outrun them but when I stop these tiny pests are all over me like a bunch of kids in a pool on a hot summer day .

Citronella doesn't work much for me and DEET irritates my throat. Do you have any suggestions besides moving to antartica?

I heard that Listerene (the mouth wash) works. I looked it up online and some people swear by it, but it also mentioned that it doesn't have deet in it and that's the only protection against West Nile. I have tried it this year, it seems to work good for me and one of the kids, but the other one (who is a magnent) is still getting bit.

Please share any tips... my poor baby <---------  got eaten alive yesterday!  Her ear is twice the size beat red and on fire from a bite... not to mention an egg size one on her forehead and also on her calf (both beat red and on fire)...  she got these with DEET spray on her.  Poor baby is so miserable I am taking her to doc just to make sure they are mosquito bites and not spider or something else as even benedryl doesn't help with the itch and pain.

For the Listerine tip, I vaporised some in my porch last year. The place stunk for almost a month but it did not much for preventing the pests from getting in. However I used the light mint flavor, whay I had on hand, maybe I should have try the original amber kind. No kidding, maybe it works.

I also heard about rubbing your skin with fresh garlic, but who wants to do that?

I tried Skin-so-soft, it works 15, 20 min, half a hour top.

I wear light colored clothing as often as I can. It does help a little. But wearing long sleeves when it is 30c+ (90F+ in the US) outside..., you know what I mean.

A special message to Houston-tri-mama. Go see a doc right away! My guess is that your kid is allergic to the sting. They have stuff to compose with that. Then they can give you some kind of device (it was an intramuscular syringe maybe it has changed) which stop the swelling so you have time to get care.

One of my friend's daughter was deeply allergic to stinging and fly bites. Was - because it settles down as she's getting older. It saved her life a few times.

There are several mechanical devices out there now. I have heard great things about some of them that are at the outdoor stores, my hunting friends say they work great.

Off has a new one out now, going to pick a couple up and try out. I will report back.

we went right after I reported in.... the doc put hr on some antibiotic because they were so hot to the touch not to mention red and swollen 2-3x the normal...  he didn't give her anything stronger then benedryl (double dose) for swelling.  She was is a bad state - and still is as they still itch occassionally and the "bite/sting" entrance is all scratched up and raw....  still on those antibiotics though!

I just went to http://www.offprotects.com/and even if I'am not convinced I think it's worth a try. Must read the precaution though, this stuff seems highly toxic.

Skin So Soft works very well for me ... even kept me bite-free when I lived in the jungles of Costa Rica.

Another vote for Skin So Soft.

I thought it was just hype, but I worked the Danskin/SheROX Tri in Miami a few weeks ago and the Sweeper had some in her pack.  The bugs were SO BAD!  Sprayed myself down, no more issues.  Brought some to our Moto guys, and they were happy too.

Need to make a note to get my own bottle before the ESM race in July.  That race was crawling with them last year.

FWIW:  I've 'heard' that 'skeeters bite more on 'O' blood types.  I'm B+, blonde, fair skin (except for I live in South Florida where everyone has a bit of an obligatory tan).  Has anyone else heard of or noticed this?

I went to the Avon web page and found the SKIN SO SOFT Bug Guard Plus product. Sorry I haven't tried this one, must have it confused with something else. Where do you get this one besides the Avon lady?

I went to Canadian Tire today. They have all the Off! products except the clip-on. I'll keep that on the agenda.

Thank for your replies everyone and keep me posted if you have anything else.

Only AVO lady will have it.  You can go to avon.com and get linked up with a rep and order thru her/him.... it should only take 7-10 days to get it as AVON delivery bi-weekly.

we haven't had much luck with avon products.... from experience (prior avon rep here) I know many people love it but with my girls it just doesn't work.

I saw that clip on this and want to try it on baby <-------  she got another round of bits tonight walking 3 blocks home from pool!  Not as bad as last week but she got it right at suit-butt line and she was itching bad! not to mention her arms....  thankfully not her face this time!  Anyways, the clip is on shopping list for tomorrow!

Thanks,

I think there is an Avon rep at work. I'll ask her is I can find who it is.

Thankfully it looks like your kid is not as intolerant to the sting as my friend's daughter.

Take care

Must go to bed it's half past midnight around here.

Almost any product that will cover your CO2 emissions will work. Mosquitos are attracted to the CO2 given off by your body. I used to work for Mosquito control here in Michigan. I do try to avoid deet tho as it is a very harsh chemical. in low doses not to bad but we had the 100% deet from army surplus and that stuff melts plastic.

How do I cover my CO2 emission? Chewing gum? What flavor works best?

Seriously, I know they are attracted by CO2, sweat and dark colors such as red and black.

The color issue is somewhat easy to go by, but the other two....  How do I breath out anything else than CO2?
As I mentioned ealier, I don't see myself rubbing arms, legs and neck with garlic pasteFrown. Not to mention that it doesn't wash easy on the skin. And a garlic breath, well....

To change of subject, I haven't been able to reach an Avon lady yet. They are everywhere until you need one. Guess I'll order throu Email.

I put some Ungava insect repellent (30% deet) on my cap today. Works great to do what its name says. Worked around the swimming pool and no mosquito or bug came around - usualy it's more like a vampire rave.

But the same problem came across, allthough it was more discrete. I could literaly taste the *** thing, even though it was not in direct contact with my skin. I had to spit a few times just to get that taste out. When I came in an hour later a had to listerine to get rid of the taste. I believe you when you say this stuff in its pure form can melt plastic.

Result: Works great but unhealty.

I own a pet store and I am trying out a new product called Shoo!Tag.

It's an electromagnetic tag (much like a credit card) that you put on dogs and cats to repel ticks & fleas, horses to repel horse flies and people to repel mosquitos. I just tried out the people mosquito tag today and it seemed to work fairly well, but I haven't given it a thorough test yet. So it's early days.

You can order them online at:

http://www.shootag.com/

Good Luck!

Amanda

With the Clip-On thing, it specifically says it is for staying in one place. Great for picnics, a tent, campground, whatever, not for running.

A dryer sheet is the trick we used on horses. Tuck into the back of your cap and/or your waistband. Not stylish, but it works!

I tried that this afternoon while working around the garden. I tucked a sheet of Bounce at the back of my cap like they do in the desert with cloth. I don't know about mosquitos by those little fruit flies kept coming at me, buzzing around my head and into my hears, literaly.

I don't know if I had the wrong scent but it failed for me.

You could always move out here to Las Vegas, no standing water....no mosquitos, and biking year round.

I grew up in upstate NY where summer meant 90 degrees, with 90% humidity and 90 million mosquitos.  I don't miss them at all.
