Born To Tri this weekend

Yes, it appears the transition area is the same as it was for Metroman. When I was there yesterday standing on the beach it just looked like a very, very long run to that parking lot. I imagine T1 times will be a little "higher" then norm...plus running through the beach. Oh well, I look at it as an experience and enjoyment! We are there to have fun, right?

If the current stays the way it was yesterday, we will be swimming into it the entire time as go out around 3rd Avenue and swim down towards 1st avenue, current yesterday was going opposite direction. On the plus side, temp was very nice (mid-70's) and that was with rain. 

On the website it says 4 waves so curious to know how many people signed up and how they are sending us out?  I already told my wife and kids that it will be much different then NJ State but that they should be able to see me more times on the bike and run this time....absolutely take the cheering section to bring us home!

Plan on doing the swim course tomorrow. Probably check out the bike course on Wednesday. I live in the area and the bike course around the lake at the north end could be bumpy! Will post results in the coming days.

Swam the swim course this morning around 8:00. No waves, no chop, nice swim. Temp good, too. Going to check the bike course later today. (Don't expect any Bruce sightings. He lives in Rumson and never shows for the Sheehan Classic, so I doubt he'll be at Asbury. Sometimes he or Bon Jovi will show up for their kids games but not to spectate other games.......sorry. )

Drove the bike course (Sorry, it's around 90 here today so not going to ride it until maybe tomorrow morning). The first left off Ocean onto 7th has some bumps at the crosswalk and the right from 7th onto Kingsley has some patches, too. The north end as you transition off Kingsley Street to Ocean Avenue as you go around Deal Lake has two bone jaring bumps as you turn right, maybe we can stay left and avoid them. Once you get into Loch Arbour, it smooths out. The approach back onto Kingsley has some patch work and is uneven, but not as bad leaving Kingsley. The rest, like Ocean Ave, is pretty smooth.

The south leg has a real tight turn off Cookman onto Heck. Also when you start the second and third loops there is a S turn off Lake Ave back onto Cookman, then a right onto Asbury Ave before you get onto Ocean. So there might be some two way traffic at the intersection of Cookman and Asbury.

Otherwise a nice route. You go pass the Stone Pony, Convention Center, Deal Lake (Watch the beginning and end) and Sunset Lake.

Oh yeah, parking is by meter. Free parking ends at 9:00am. Remember your parking number then find a blue meter that you can pay with cash or credit card. The blue meters are close to intersections.....

Except for the north end, the bike course is pretty smooth on Ocean and Kingsley. Just watch that north loop around Deal Lake!

You got it. Flat, smooth (mostly) and some tight turns.

Thank you Millman.  I can't tell you how many people still come up to me and say they had a great time at LavaMan.  You guys made it, I just get you rolling.

Asbury will have about 200 people.  I thought we'd have more, but this our first year and it is a building process, and also a process where we build loyalty and friends by putting on a great race. 

I will tell you that this is one of my favorite bike courses in sprint, despite what I read here.  Not because I am the RD.  I kept this course the same after doing it at 2008 Metroman and absolutely loved it.  All of the turns carry momentum, and I averaged 22 or 23 mph on it last year I believe, and that was on my computer, not race results.  

You only have so many bullets as a racer to dig deep out of a turn, and still run well.  That is the challenge here.  Same course for everyone...but who is the better bike handler, who is smarter at keeping the tempo even, and who can run off a 13 mile bike sprint that has taxed your muscles way more than a loop at Island Beach State Park ever will.

It's urban, it's different, and I think you will enjoy it.  Don't race in the mode of what you don't want to happen....adjust and challenge yourself to race with what you have in front of you.

We are serving eggs and potatos for breakfast, but road rash is not on the menu, so be smart out there, and thanks again for all the support as The Jersey Shore Sprint Series continues to grow.  You can say you were there in the beginning.  Not many people will be able to say that down the road, so we are building our own tradition from the ground up- and you are a part of it!
