My daughter's tri is coming up and while she swims every day, she has very little open water experience. I am wondering about the swim start. For her kids triathlons, we just explained what was going to happen and let her decide where she wanted to start from. She chose to start right in the middle, got out there fast and was first out of the water. For her first tri with adults, I am wondering if I should have her start to the side, or let her go to the middle. I don't know how fast she will be in comparison to adult triathletes. Her 400m pool swim is about 5:25. Is there a formula to convert 400m pool swims to open water?

Why don't you call and speak to the race director?  In most events, they have the youth start last with the clydesdale, athenas, masters and relays.  It is a little safer for them that way.  If it is her first mass open water swim, I would suggest lining up on the outside left and taking an angle to the first marker and then she will have some clean water.  I don't know about any formula's to convert time.

Thanks Michael, I think I will call the race director as you suggested. This will be her first mass open water swim and fortunately, it is me that is worried about it, not her! I guess the time thing doesn't really matter because on the entry forms they only ask your 100 yard swim time anyway.
