Subject: Question on Olympic Training Program
Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask. I've raced a few triathlons in the past, but it's been a couple of years. I'm planning a comeback, and my wife is eager to join me (she's completed two sprints). We've penned in an Olympic in August. I'm the kind of person who likes a detailed training plan to follow. I don't train so well when left up to my whims.

I like the 20 Week Olympic plan on this site, but I have a question: Why are the swim times so long, and the run times so low?

I'm not a good swimmer - I've always finished the swim leg in around 45 minutes. The maximum swim time in the training plan is 77 minutes, or 1.7 times my expected swim time.

My expected run time is around 60 minutes. But the maximum run time in the training plan is only 77 minutes, or 1.28 times my expected run time.

Wouldn't more balanced max times, say 1.5 times expected race time, make more sense? If training in one discipline is more important than another, then why not the run, since it is the last, and to me, the most gruelling leg?

I am thinking of dropping all the swim times in the training program by about 25%, and increasing the run times by about the same. Anybody have any experience with this? Thanks

since this is a beginner site, and wanting to make this 'easy as pie'  i based all my times on the 'back of packers.' i looked at various race stats and the times for the last ~2/3rds of the finishers - ignoring outliers.  most people regular to endurance will exceed the distances i provided, which is def ok!  but like the run time u mentioned...i dont want to kill total beginners to endurance by having them train 90m -120min (as i think your suggesting) for the run...as a newbie myself, i was fine in my tris by training to the distance and a little over...plus the option is always to walk as a beginner...i just want people to love the sport...i am not competitive though...if people want to be more competitive, they most certainly will want to train longer as u suggested, providing they have a decent pace.  these programs are just a 'skeleton' to get people into the sport to finish and have fun and not spend all the time training...u can definitely tailor them to suit your individual needs.

the swim times r longer as i dont want anyone drowning...i want to make damn sure they can do the distance on the slowest pace.  there is something very fearful about not touching  or seeing the bottom!

hope this explained my rational...im not saying its correct by any means, just a suggestion...SO....just multiply or divide the durations acrossed the board by numbers u feel comfotable with.

I've read that many triathletes will spend up to half their training time in the pool. Others say half on the bike, a quarter on the running and a quarter in the pool because this is how the race will work out.
It makes sense to me to swim more because you will get the most benefit with the least abuse to your body in the pool. I spend most of my training time running and cycling. I swim reletively little because I love running and cycling and the swimming I could take or leave. If there were Ironman duathlons I probably wouldn't swim at all. If I lived in a good place for outdoor swimming I'd probably love it and do tonnes of it everyday. Whenever I go up north were the water is clean and there are lots of little lakes, I always have to swim across them.
