Subject: Noob headgame argument; "Am I hurt or injured?"

The training must really be getting to me.  I'm actually "arguing" with myself today on whether or not to HTFU and run today or take the day off (too long of a commute to substitute swimming today).  I bashed my knee up pretty good yesterday on a low-speed bike crash.  I was able to get home without any internal pain, cleaned it up, and when I woke up this morning it was a little stiff.  Flat ground walking is minor pain, but going up and down stairs is not "normal," although the pain is still minimal.  I go back to memories of my drill-sergeant asking recruits, "are you hurt or are you injured?  If you are hurt, drive on; if you are injured, request medical attention"  Since I'm not going ot the doctor (crossing fingers) I guess I'll be able to answer that about 6:00 tonight.  Geez, this gets addicting.    I feel a little like the rat willing to get shocked for more cocaine.

I'm not sure what your drill sergeant thought the difference was between being hurt and being injured. But when I blew out my ACL in 1999, the orthopod I saw told me I could do whatever didn't cause me problems. I found that to be a good guiding principle for most symptoms relating to training. If I feel pain (or in the case of my ACL, slippage), I change what I am doing.  If I feel stiff or sore, I HTFU. Pain usually means you are going to change your biomechanics and end up seriously hurt/injured.  Stiffness or soreness just means muscle exhaustion or microtears, and will get better after you are done the workout with RICE.

A commonly heard rule of thumb (which is basically what gearboy said) is that if the pain forces you to change your normal stride (running), then you shouldn't run.  If you can run NORMALLY (albeit with pain), then it might be OK.  This is what my ortho, who is now doubling as my 'coach' of sorts, tells me, and so far listening to his advice and the advice of his PA has been working for me.
