Subject: Headset spacers.
I was doing a O/H on my headset today. I have pretty close to 3 inches of spacers on that sucker. After the original fit, I just never went through the process of going lower on the bars. Is there a recommended limit on spacer gap for tri bikes? I would like to cut it down to about 1.5 inches or so. I know I'm not fit for a super aggressive aero position and could most likely absorb this much change relatively easy. I'm going to see my LBS guy tomorrow and ask him the same question. I just didn't want to enter a conversation completely unarmed. Anyy input on the subject will be appreciated.

Depends if your fork steerer tube is aluminium or carbon. Too many spacers will stress a carbon steerer and it can fail; most fork manufacturers give a spec on how high the stem can be bolted, generally in the 4-5cm range, and will often specify a minimum of 1 spacer between the stem and headset. If your steerer is aluminium, it's less of a concern, but always check with the fork manufacturer if you're stacking as high as you are.

Before cutting it down, simply swap the spacres above the stem and re-assemble. Ride for a while to be sure you like that fit. Adjust again until you're satisfied. Be sure of your position before you make that cut. Until then, yeah, the bike looks a bit dorky with the spacers on top. But still, don't commit to a change when an easier, less permanent solution tells you it's a good one.
