Comments:

First actual open water swim although not my first race, same event last year's race was in a lagoon.
Started out swimming freestyle but after a while started to panic and this cause me to get breathless. It was due to fear, fear of drowning in the sea and uncomfortable with so many swimmers around. I had to stop, relax, tread water , float on my back and calm myself down before continuing slowly in breaststroke.Swam to the side and zig zag not direct route I only reached the first buoy which is only 450m away according to the map after more than 19mins in the water!!! I must have taken a lot of time to calm myself down and did not swim in a straight line.....But after the first buoy regain my confidence and proceed my normal swimming routine.
What would you do differently?:

Never panic. relax and do freestyle. I know I should be able to do freestyle comfortably for that distance in the swimming pool. My worst 1500m swim timing ever, Oh well, There's always a next time

yo bro! take it easy man! Great that you managed to complete the race. Yes, it can be quite scary. Front crawl helps you focus on your swimming. Breaststroke makes you see too much of the distance and how far you're away from any land mass - hence the panic attack. I kept going on frontcrawl and at one stage was even humming some tunes to myself. I kind of gave up trying to fight the currents and I found that keeping myself occupied helped me get to my target!

Keep it up! Like you said, you can only improve!

Keep working on that run, lots of time can be taken off there.
