Hi,

My name is Patrick.  I will be doing my first sprint tri in 2 weeks.  I'm currently 225 lbs, down from 285 about a year ago.  When I decided to get back in shape, I was so worried about my body that I was afraid to exert myself lest my knees (or heart) gave out.

So I ended up signing up with a personal trainer.  My initial thought was I hoped he would know how to work me without killing me.  Well, sure enough he knew how to work me and almost (figuratively) killed me in the early days, but little by little I started to get a fitness base.  More importantly, I got the confidence to push myself without fear.  After about 6 months, I "graduated" with 40 less pounds, discipline, a fitness base, a knowledge base, and confidence.  From there I started running, biking, and swimming, and still try to hit the gym twice a week on my own.

I owe my trainer big time.  Without the base I was able to achieve with him, I'm not sure how far I would have gotten.  I know that personal training is expensive, but it really, really helped me.  In fact it may have been the key to it all, because over time I realized that my weight loss goals turned into an overall long term lifestyle shift.  And I think that part came in part from just having a trainer around talking about life and fitness between sets.  It was very inspiring.

Great story Patrick and congratulations on your success.  One question I have for you; how long did you work on low intensity / long duration exercises versus going anerobic?

I ask because on another forum a gentleman wanted to join the military but was told he had to lose 60lbs.  I advised him to consider a low price heart rate monitor, check with his doctor and then simply work on low heart rate, low impact, long duration exercises combined with his diet.  I mentioned to him that he did not need to go anerobic to lose body fat.  I was jumped on by two different people saying that it was bad information.

I have dropped 30lbs using those exact methods when I found out a steel rod in my hip had broken and I was in pain.  I did long duration recumbent cycling combined with a low carb diet and the pounds dropped quite easily.

Sorry for the long post but I'm curious as to your approach.

First I would always warm up on a piece of cardio equipment for 10 minutes to get things going.  Then we would super set all the exercises.  For example, we would do a chest exercise 12-15 reps, immediately followed by a back exercise 12-15 reps immediately followed by :45 seconds on a Stairmaster.  Then a 30 second break before repeating another 2-3 times.  And then it would be on to the next super set: biceps, shoulders and arm bike, whatever.  So my heart rate was elevated throughout the whole workout.  Also we did mostly unstable exercises with dumbells or a cable cross which really forced me to use my core to stay stable.  I'd come out of those sessions just as sweaty as I would on a run.

So I guess this approach was a hybrid, yeah?
