Hi there,

I'm sure some of you get sick of all these newbie questions, so thanks in advance for any advice. Quick background.. just completed my first sprint and loved it. I rode my mtn bike since that's all I have, it worked fine but now I want to go faster. I just picked up a friends '06 trek madone 5.2 sl that I think she would sell me super cheap and I'm looking for some pointers on what to look for when I test ride it.

I took it out for about a 20 mile ride yesterday and here's what I found so far...I could definitely feel how much smoother it was than a trek 1500 I rented a few weeks ago, really enjoyed the ride. It's also fast enough to be scary, which I'm sure will get better with experience. The only two negatives I found were that it felt 'squirrly', which I attribute to my lack of road bike experience, and my hands start to hurt from riding on the 'hoods' (i think that's what you call it)

I'm taking it back out tomorrow for a ride and also arranged to pay my LBS a little bit to tell me how it fits. Hoping someone could give me a few pointers on what to look for when riding and also any specific questions to ask at the shop. I think she'll sell it to me for about a grand and was wondering if that's as good of a deal as I think it is. The bike looks nearly new, the only problem was that it was growing cobwebs in her garage. I think the wheels need to be trued as well, which might also contribute to the 'squirrly' feeling.

thanks again for any help, eddie

The wheels might need truing, but I doubt that is making it feel squirrely.  The Madone is light and responsive bike in general.  The bike might need better fitting to deal with the hands issue; but also try moving around on the handlebars so you don't get too much compression in the same spot on the hands.

The asking price is pretty good - so if the bike fits, I would probably go for it.

Feeling "squirrly" could be from too short of a stem. Also, the hand pain could be from too short of a cockpit. You might be lucky in that, to fit you, you could need a longer stem. If that's the case, and the bike indeed fits you, you are in luck.

The $1K price is more than fair for what's now a 4 model year old bike.
