Subject: First IM 2010?
Without getting to in depth, I want to do an IM (probably FL) but am wondering if I should do a HIM first.  Should I, or is the fall of 2010 long enough to get ramped up?

My background is running (will be running my 12th marathon this fall), and I do a good bit of cycling.  Swimming (like most first timers) is my weakest, however with over a year to get that ramped up, I can't see it being a problem.

So, which way should I go?  My running is very strong, cycling is average, and swimming would be considered weak right now.

Is this even possible?

Yes.  Other people have done it with a lower fitness base than you have.

Contact your local masters swim club (usms.org).  You may not end up swimming with them, but the coach should be able to point you in the right direction.   Start swimming now and ease into it to avoid overuse injury.

Best of luck!

Doing an HIM is a optional..some do them before some don't...similar but very different too.

You have a year, I would suggest finding the best swim coach you can now so you can improve your technique so when you practice you are practicing and ingraining the best technique possible. Harder to change bad habits. Try swimming 3-4 times  a week starting as soon as possible.

Of s/b/r I'm worst at swim, but worked hard at it again this winter and finally am seeing some gains in ows. I searched out best swim coach I could (this was number 5) and she has helped me make gains.

Doing IMFL gives you plenty of opportunities for doing a HIM next year...find one that appeals to you in maybe August/September.
