Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early - drove to the Woodlands. Finished a simple meal of 1 banana - 1/4 cup oatmeal & Splenda.
Event warmup:

Stretched a little then a simple barefoot jog in the grass.
Swim
  • 20m 43s
  • 500 meters
  • 04m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

Nice course - lots of kayakers there to assist. Lost sight of 2nd bouy when I rounded the 1st marker as it was directly into the sun - had to ask a marshall where the bouy was (I was very BOP). Got reoriented and worked my way in by alternating freestyle, breaststroke and one stint of sidestroke when I got winded.
What would you do differently?:

Must improve my swimming performance. On the last leg, I sidestroked briefly and felt good doing so - might incorporate that as a better rest stroke than the breaststroke. Also, I could have used the half-john swim suit I brought (Water temps was 76 - below 78), but didn't - I always underestimate how much it helps bouyancy wise after the fact.
Transition 1
  • 04m 38s
Comments:

I practiced my transitions and I could feel it this time. I felt much quicker transitioning than in I did in my first triathlon. I tore open a carb-boom packet while dressing and tried to squeeze it into my mouth - did't get the gel completely open and when I squeezed it, it ' popped' all over my face and jersey. Got going and washed it off on the bike anyway!
What would you do differently?:

Take the extra 1.3 seconds to make sure I open my nutrition completely. Eh, live and learn :D
Bike
  • 50m 12s
  • 15.6 miles
  • 18.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good to catch some people on the bike who blew by me on the swim. I didn't deliberately try to pace it - just worked out that way. I was trying to race my race and keep average speed above 18 MPH. When others passed me, I just had to remind myself to race the clock - not them. No need to chase someone and blow up before the run.
What would you do differently?:

I felt pretty good - I should have pushed it harder though.
Transition 2
  • 03m 44s
Comments:

I made a change this Tri in my transiition and cycled in my wet bare feet. I had trouble putting on socks in T1 on my first tri and reasoned if I held off on the socks until T2, my feet would by dry then from the venting on my shoes anyway.
What would you do differently?:

Take my cycling gloves off before I leave T2! I looked like a boxer exiting T2!
Run
  • 42m 21s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 13m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow - what happened to my legs? It took almost 3/4 a mile to get my running legs together! Glad I didn't stick it on the bike too hard by now. Around mile 2, left hamstring just tightened up and had to stop and stretch - did intervals until the finish line then (run/walk)
What would you do differently?:

Overall - felt I had a good run - need to do more incline work and practice bricks after long rides next time.
Post race
Warm down:

Collapsed in the grass - gave hugs all around to my girlfriend and friends - then asked my buddy to help me stretchmy hammy... ugh - not a fun pain. Finally walked it off and picked up my gear for home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim wise - Just need to work on it. Need to proactice and time myself to see if sidestroke is a better recovery stroke than breaststroke.

Biking wise - Could have sucked it up and gone anaerobic on the bike - maybe gotten 19/19.25 out of me, but was afraid of blowing up before coming to a hill. Instead, I ran it conservatively. Should have scouted the course out the day before.

Run - need to stretch more before I start. Again - must do more bricks to acquaint myself with that 'dead leg' feel.

Event comments:

This was by far one of the best put one races I have seen or heard about. A limited field of 600 participants made for easy wave starts - no washing machine effect. Also - the course layout and amenities were well thought out. Race director did a really good job. Also plenty of referees from USAT kept everyone honest. A clean, fun race in a beautiful setting with lots of volunteers and support. Times were posted quickly. Just a well managed event all around.

Congratulations on your race... It was really a well organized event.. I will definitly will put this one on my calendar next year..  I like it a lot...  seems that other than your hamstring you had a great race as well..  The sun in the swim messed me up... but I was happy with my performace overall...

Cheers

Yep - Sun got me too, but I was still faster than my first triathlon in Galveston and look forward to this one again next year.
