Subject: Training Log vs Future Race Plans
Hello,

I will be 50 this December 1st and have been doing Triathlons for just under one year now.  Most have been very very short super sprint races but I have done two regular sprint distance races.  The first race was a disaster, as I did not train at all for it, could not swim more than 25 yards freestyle and road my kids full suspension mountain bike.  I did finish in under two hours though.

If you look at my logs (calender view) you will see that I have been training fairly regularly.  Don't laugh at my lack of running time and distance, I just started running last month, (I am not much of a runner).  While my training is regular, I am not able to invest much more total time training, as I need to balance my family, work and entertainment time as equitably as possible.

My second to last race, a sprint triathlon in July at Rancho Seco was a 1/2 mile swim, 16 mile bike, 3 mile run, I placed 8th in 38 in my AG (44-49) and 112th in 426 over all.  So I am making some fitness progress and doing better in races.  My next race is in three weeks and I plan on being FOP (top 25%) overall and FOP (top 25%) AG.

My plan for next year is to concentrate on sprint races for the first 1/2 to 1/4th of the summer and then compete in some Olympic distance races towards the end of the year.  So far, I have been a conservative racer and feel I may do better in longer races.

Does that seem like a reasonable plan based on my training?

Thanks

You should be fine doing olys next year. All you need to do is a little more volume in the swim and run. Your swim training should get closer to 3000 yards per session at a minimum, and if you could do 20-25 miles/week of running you should have no problem. Olys tend to draw a bit more competitive people though, so you may not place as high depending on the race.

Thanks Don, sounds like great advice.  I think I will start training for Olys and keep racing sprints so I can place better.  It would be a serious buzz kill to wind up BOP in my first few Olys.  Maybe late late next season I will give an Oly a try.

Thanks again.
