Subject: 2010 MTB with slicks.. or road bike made in the 80's?
I know there have been many questions about mountain bikes versus road bikes and I know that most all the answers have been, if you can get your hands on a cheap road bike--do it.   But I'm just curious if this includes an older road bike, which might be heavier than my specialized hardrock sport, or if the frame and the 'essence' of the road bike would make up for this?  Just want to make sure that if I get an older road bike for like 200, it will perform better than the one I could use (the mountain.

Thanks,
Sarah

If you're having fun with the MTB, why buy a road bike?  I draw the line at IM, where I always ride my tri-bike, but have ridden my MTB and road bikes up to HIM distance.

HT MTB can be surprisingly fast with slick tires.  Main advantage of road or tri bike is aerodynamics.  Also taller gearing for riding very fast.  If you use your MTB a lot, gotta ask if it's worth it to you to have 2 bikes to store, maintain, etc.
