Subject: RE: National Triathlon - DChornsfan - 2009-08-17 9:03 PM So I found the Universl Sports channel this past weekend and set the DVR to record anything Triathlon.
It recorded the women's triathlon that just recently took place in DC. I noticed that all of the women were using road bikes with clip on bars, and it seemed like they were allowed to draft.
Do certain tri's allow it but then require they use road bikes.
I would have figured they would have been using tri bikes. These were like professional triathletes. What you saw was the ITU World Championship series race that happened here in DC in June. ITU (International Triathlon Union) rules are different than USAT. In ITU races, drafting is allowed, but time-trial/triathlon bikes are not. The riders are allowed to have very short clip-on aerobars on the front. USAT sanctioned races do NOT allow drafting, and therefore, you can ride whatever, really. And races that are not sanctioned by any governing body are the same way, unless the rules specify otherwise. PS - the "Nation's Triathlon" that they hold in DC in September is NOT part of this series. It's a regular USAT-sanctioned event, though it takes place on basically the same course.
