I just finished my third and last tri of my first season and am already thinking about next year.  I live in cold and snowy northern Ohio but would like to do an Olympic tri down south during the winter.  The problem is that with the snow that we usually get here from Dec-Feb is not conducive to long bike rides.  Is it realistic to sign up for a tri in Florida in March if most of my bike training will be on a trainer?  Also, I obviously won't be able to do any open water swims.  Will my open water experience from this year (with continued pool training over the winter) be enough to get me through a tri in that time frame?  Opinions and suggestions wanted.  Thanks.

I lived in NE Ohio when I got into this gig and went from my first tri (A sprint in Youngstown with a pool swim) to Eagleman. So, ruling out the ignorance is bliss factor I would say go for it. I was training for Eagleman and the swim was long, but bearable and actually enjoyable. If you have a wetsuit and train for it, and you are confident and don't panic at your sprint swim, you'll be just fine. Go for it. You won't regret it and it's a great excuse to get out of NE OH in the winter or endless spring. Aren't those winter days on the trainer watching football great??!!

Nizzracer--You went from a sprint to a half iron--And I thought the jump from sprint to olympic was big.  That just goes to show that anything is possible if you train for it.
