Set up-Inc

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 21m 21s
Overall Rank = 185/593
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 22/69
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5, ate a 1/2 bagel with peanut butter, 1/2 bannana. Drank a cup of coffee and 20 oz gatorade.
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 13m 42s
  • 750 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a good swim, started in the middle of the pack, got bumped a few times on the way to the buoy but had a clean swim otherwise.
What would you do differently?:

I never think about drafting, I should try this next time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Had a good transition, had no problem finding my rack. Did not make the same mistake I made last year of trying to put on gloves, my wife did not have to yell at me to get moving which was a good thing. Took almost a minute off of last years T1
What would you do differently?:

Not much to do different.
Bike
  • 41m 59s
  • 15 miles
  • 21.44 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on the bike, the hills were tough, we have no hills where I live so I just tried to spin going up and not loose too much speed. I have heard that coming out of the saddle to climb increases your heart rate more than sitting so I sat on all the climbs. Got passed by 5 people in my age group but passed a bunch of people not in my age group. Took 1 minute off my last years time, I was hoping for more.
What would you do differently?:

I should have changed to the big ring on the downhills, my max speed on the downhill was 35, I had and irational fear that my chain would come off if I changed from the small ring to the big ring so I stayed in the small ring.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Had a good transition, avoided a pile up at the dismount line, racked my bike, running shoes on, grabbed some gum and my number and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Could have been quicker getting my shoes on, got a little carried away with the vaseline on the heels and had a hard time getting a grip on the back of the shoe to get it on.
Run
  • 23m 14s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 39s  min/km
Comments:

Right from the start of the run the little voice said I was in trouble. My legs felt dead, the small hills felt like mountains. I had a good run last year and was expecting the same this year, Wrong! I had thought based on what I cut off my last years time on the swim and bike that I had a good chance to really knock a good chunk of time off, when I saw this was not going to happen I think I mentally checked out.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know why the run seemed so hard, I should have focused on my splits to try and be more even. I did not drink at all on the run and maybe not enough on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Went and sat in the lake after, PCB's or not it felt great. Got a big hug from my cow bell riniging wife, had some red beans and rice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I should have hammered it more on the downhills on the bike, I should have sucked it up on the run and picked up the pace. Need to work on my mental game.

Event comments:

I love this race, lots of people, lots of energy.

Great race! Swim was super and the bike was excellent! Didn't those hills suck? I think you powered through the run great! I, too had troubles with the run... just ran the tank dry! It was a hot day!
