Pre-race routine:

Drove to Basalt Friday, crashed at friend's house.
Got up, had coffee and a choc chip cookie, drove to Aspen, signed up for the race.

Event warmup:

Had to run about a 100ft up the mountain to the start - HR got up there.
Run
  • 1h 16m 10s
  • 4.5 miles
  • 16m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

It was cooler than previous year, and I felt a little stronger. I started off running but when people started passing me hiking on the steeper parts I switched to speed walking too, all in all ran about 1/2 and hiked about 1/2. One woman who ended up beating me by a minute speed walked the whole way. I think some people are just better uphill hikers, plus if I still lived there and could practice the course, I would know exactly which parts I should hike and which parts to run to be faster overall.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more uphill in my training. Do this course at least once a year before the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a little bit. Drank water and ate muffins.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Altitude. Not having enough trail runs in my training, especially uphill.

Event comments:

Improved my time from last year by about 7 min, but still did a min slower than my record from two years ago - I don't get it! It was my first year of running ever and I did a 1:15 then, I have improved in every event since than and I am fitter overall, but I have not improved on this course.
I guess I would have to practice the course to break through.

Great Job Lilia... It is a super-hard course and you finished strong. I think it is totally a mental thing. YOU ARE MENTAL (to even consider torturing yourself up that mountain). Seriously, you can do that course faster and you will!

Thanks!
Amongst all other things we do, it just can't really be #1 race, it's just a fun tradition.
Pretty crazy actually - having to drive 3hrs there and 3hrs back just to run for an hr (or more in my case)
