change in the route planner

When I used to map out my routes before I could make my route go anywhere but something seems to have changed with the software. It's nice in one way because when I map out my route it automatically follows the road so I don't have to spend as long mapping it. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow me to map a route along any bike paths. It keeps bringing me on the nearest roads.Am I missing something? Is there something I can do to fix that? I'm probably the only person on the forum without a gps.
