Comments: My goal was 35 minutes and I nailed it just about on the head. I started out relaxed but then had a few navigation issues after about 200-300yd. Shortly before the first left turn I was able to find some feet that were going at a really good pace for me and I stayed with them for pretty much the rest of the race. What would you do differently?: Time and effort was really good. Still need some open water navigation work though. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Major wetsuit issues. You have to come up the beach and cross a road into transition, so that should be enough time to get the suit down to the waist, but I could not get it off my left forearm! Once that was off I of course had trouble with the ankles too. Could feel myself getting sloppy trying to rush, so I knelt down to put on my socks and relax a bit. Once I had the bike I moved quick and got clipped in pretty well. What would you do differently?: Get the dang wetsuit off! ![]() Bike
Comments: As a stand alone ride, this was a solid result given that my fitness probably wasn't up to par for the distance. My weekends were crazy busy all summer so I didn't get in as many long rides as I would have preferred, but I was still determined to get under 3 hours for this split. So I went out and focused on solid spinning up the hills and keeping the pace up without going over the limit. I was still riding strong by the end, but I knew there wasn't much left in my legs for the half marathon. What would you do differently?: Must have better discipline and pace myself better. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Really smooth transition, 3rd fastest in the race What would you do differently?: Nothing ![]() Run
Comments: To sum this run up in on word: KABOOM! I knew my legs were shot, but I also knew I was about 1:36:00 away from beating my HIM PR. I tried to go for it and made it almost two miles running sub 7:00 pace. At first it was just really bad cramping in my side and quads. Walking didn't really help and I quickly realized I was in bad shape. I mixed running and walking and spent a lot of time at each aid station, trying to drink, eat and cool off. Nothing was working, and when I came around for the 2nd loop, I just hoped I would finish. I had a few moments of stubborn motivation (such as when someone in my AG caught up to me) but mostly I was forced to walk. As I neared the crowd by the finish I made sure to run it in, and pretty much collapsed shortly after crossing the line. Jamie summed it up perfectly: (referring to how pale I was) "You look like crap" What would you do differently?: Shouldn't have started off so fast, but the real damage was done with improper pacing on the bike. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Fell on the ground, then after Jamie brought me some water I stumbled my way to the lake and plopped down in it. What limited your ability to perform faster: Poor pacing Last updated: 2011-04-14 12:00 AM

Went for an easy spin, ~1 mile
