Set Up, Inc. - Greenville
95F / 35C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 47m 57s
Overall Rank = 56/men/75/men
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 6/6
Pre-race routine:

Had some coffee, a bagel, and a danish. Went to race site and checked in to pick up chip and get marked. Set up TA.
Event warmup:

Went to the lake and swam for about 10 minutes.
Swim
  • 21m 36s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very slow on the swim. Lost so much time to the others in my AG that I had no chance of making it up on the bike and run. But I'm so because I had no anxiety on the swim. I was very calm and my breathing was excellent. I was not tired at all coming out of the water, I was just behind everyone. No gasping, no sickness, just smooth(slow) sailing.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster on the last 2/3 of the course. Once I seen that my breathing was going to be OK I should have sped up but I didn't risk it. I knew I was going to be slow and I enjoyed the swim. My goggles fogged so bad I couldn't see. Stopped and tread water long enough to clear them and put them back on.
Transition 1
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

Ran through a sandy area prior to TA so took time to wash and dry feet.
What would you do differently?:

Would have said "screw it" and just put the bike shoes on and left.
Bike
  • 49m 55s
  • 15 miles
  • 18.03 mile/hr
Comments:

Underestimated the hills. These hills were tough. It was uphill right out of the TA. Too many minutes of 8-9 mph for a few seconds of 30-35. Hit 39 mph on one downhill where I hit a pothole so hard my aerobottle sponge was lost and I got a face full of water.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing to do but suffer. I'm a flatlander with no hills to train on. Besides had I been a few minutes slower on the bike would not have helped my run. 38th overall was somewhat of a brightspot. I knew half way into the bike that the rest of this race would not be a pretty site.
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

I was fairly spent and took a minute getting my shoes on to dry to gather myself. To no avail.
What would you do differently?:

Have some O2 and an AED available.
Run
  • 31m 50s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Had no legs. All the recent gains I've made in my running was for naught today. The only smart thing I did was carry a flask of hydro fuel which helped a lot. Actually got my legs back at about the 2.5 mile mark. Finished strong but then again the finish was downhill.
What would you do differently?:

I would have been tactically smarter on the bike especially with gear selection in an effort to conserve some legs.
Post race
Warm down:

It was pretty hot by the end of the race so I had some ice water and I dipped a towel in some iced water and tried to cool off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of hill training. Failure to take advantage of being able to swim faster. The heat.

Event comments:

Enjoyed being part of a group for this race whereas I normally travel alone. I will race this course again but will probably do the Olympic.

Way to hang tough!!  You know it is really hard for those of us who live in such flat areas, and I know the area you raced...it's very hilly!  Good for you for even taking it on, I would not have even tried!  Great job!!

Hello...You'll have to tell me you're real name so we can say hello at Hickory Knob which I am (hopefully) doing as well. Hate to tell you but it is a hilly course, but was one of my favorite races last year. It is a very nice park. The swim is usually wetsuit legal which helps (me anyway). I've been nursing a running injury and had to drop out of the SC 1/2 IM but am hoping to be back up to speed so to speak for Hickory Knob.
I actually thought the bike course at Hartsville was more difficult than Greenville, though it may be that I just had a better race at greenville.
Congrats on Hartsville and Good Luck at Hickory Knob.
