Subject: My first pair of Nike shoes!
I got my first pair of Nike shoes EVER!

I've had some other name-brand running shoes (Asics in high school, Etonic, Brooks, Reebok, and now NewBalance), but this is the first time I've ever owned a pair of Nike shoes (I'm 40 by the way).

We went to one of the local bike shops, and they had a pair of cycling shoes on sale (really on sale) in my size, so I bought them and a pair of clipless pedals.

Any advice to minimize the pain and suffering of the switch from platform to clipless pedals?

Mike

Mike,

Congratulations on the upgrade to clipless pedals.  You'll love what they do for you.  As far as pain, the only pain you'll suffer is from falling over, which everyone must do at least once after switching to clipless.  Just go outside right now, clip in and fall over.  Get it over with!!!

Really though, set the release tension low for the first few weeks until you get used to clipping in and out of the pedals.  Also make sure the cleats are set up right.  There's usually less float with clipless pedals and you can develop knee pain if you don't have them set up right.  Remember that the cleat should be right under the ball of your foot, which should be directly in-line with the pedal axle.

Have fun!

But, your only allowed to fall over once! That's the rules, and there will be no leway with the rules!

Good Luck,
