Overall Rank = 225/243
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 15/15
Pre-race routine:

Re-checked bike. Felt comfortable.
Event warmup:

600 mile walk from transition to beach. Barefoot.
Swim
  • 28m 55s
  • 437 yards
  • 06m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Longer swim than I expected. At the first buoy I grabbed a hold of a surfboard and thought I should pack it in. It was a lot longer swim than I had ever done. Another guy was there, too. The kid on the board asked the other guy if he wanted a tow in. He said yes. Then the kid asked me if I was going in. I had two answers in my head. My heart made the decision. I said "no".
I was going to swim. I was going to get on my bike. I was going finish, no matter what. The guy hangin on the board with me looked at me then the kid and said he was still in, and off we went. I did not see the guy again, but when I looked back at the kid on the surfboard, now with 3 more hanging on, the guy was not there.

Seemed to to be about 600 yards. I need to learn to swim.
What would you do differently?:

Stay extremely calm. RELAX.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

6.5 minutes to get from water to T1.And I jogged part of the way, barefooted. Down and across the beach. Through the tunnel under the road. Up the path past the outhouse. Through the woods. Down the road past the picnic area. And into T1. Must have been over half a mile.

About 100 yards walking a narrow path before mounting bike. No way to pass slow person in front of you.

Took my time, but did good, for me. Felt confident.
What would you do differently?:

Bring extra shoes to wear on the run from the beach to T1.
Bike
  • 41m 8s
  • 10 miles
  • 14.59 mile/hr
Comments:

100 yards out---FLAT TIRE. Tried to pump it up, twice. Then changed it. Ate up alot of time. Made the ride great though. I really wanted to make up some time after the MANY minutes on the side of the road. I flew the rest of the way, averaging around 20 mph. It was cool.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe buy better tubes??
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Good transition. A little tired after the hard ride.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 38m 3s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Very slow start. Lower back tight. No legs left after hard swim and ride. Second lap went better. I knew my time was bad overall, so I just took my time and enjoyed the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Warm water and gaterade. Walked around 30 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My excruciating lack of swimming ability.
Flat tire.

Event comments:

Nothing cold to drink. Snacks were brown bananas and brick-like cookies. Guess I better get to the finish sooner next time.

All in all though, I still had a great time. Made some new friends. Great experience. Now I just need to learn to swim.

Gordon

Gordon,
Sorry to hear about the tough swim, followed by the long run to T1, then the flat....dang, you get the picture. You toughed it out, through a tough race. You should be proud. I'm doing the sprint on South Beach this Sunday if you're up for one last tri for the season. Otherwise, we should just kick back and go fishing!

Way to hang in there and not give up on the swim.  I know the feeling.

Don't flats suck?  Someones got to invent a tire/tube combo that's flat-proof.
