Subject: Texas cyclist who wants to try some triathalons/duathalons
My names Austin, I'm 16 and have been racing on the mountain bike for a few years now and have recently moved up to the expert level and am getting good results, I also train mostly on the road bike and race as a cat. 5 on it, but only because I havent done enough races yet. I used to be a good swimmer and run some too... I found this website and saw that I could use it as a training log for my bike as well as the triathalons/marathon I would like to do in the spring. Does anybody have advice for me regarding the training and equipment for swimming and running, what should I be practicing in my stroke for swim, what type of shoes could I use for a marathon and trail running as well, etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated. The events I am planning to do so far are the Houston marathon and the gulfshore galveston half ironman in april.

Well, if you've already got a decent road bike, the rest of the necessary equipment is really pretty minimal.  Ideally, you would have a pair of trail running shoes and a pair of road shoes, but it may not be necessary.  Check with a true running store to get fitted.  I would advise against places like Garts, Footlocker, etc. because they really are not well versed in running mechanics.  Here in Colorado, I always go to Runner's Roost.

As for your swim stroke, I'm not all that proficient a swimmer, so all I really do is freestyle w/ a variety of drills.  If you have a swim background at all, and have ever been formally coached, pull from lessons learned there.  If not, then look for a Master's swim group and see if you can train w/ them.

Good luck and keep us posted on how things are going.
