This afternoon I was swimming with my normal swim partner. She is faster than I am, so she usually leads. During one of our sets I started much closer behind her than usually and I had absolutely no problems sticking with her. I actually felt myself going faster than her and had to remind myself to slow down about every 25m. I'm pretty sure that I was drafting off of her.

To my knowledge there are not any rules about drafting during the swim portion of a TRI. Do you think that it would be a good idea to try and draft off of somebody during a race? I'm sure that I was going faster with much less effort and can see how that could make a significant difference in a race.

Drafting in the swim is legal and smart. In a race find someone who is swimming at your pace and you will save about 10% energy drafting. Be sure and stay just off their feet because if you hit their feet it will knock them off their normal rhythm.

That brings up something that I think needs to be said. If at all possible try get in the pool with several people and practice drafting. Race day is not the time to try to get comfortable with being that close to someone.

Still Tri'n
