Total Time = 1h 35m 44s
Overall Rank = 289/505
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 28/37
Pre-race routine:

Usual meal of croissant and iced coffee. Ate a little closer to race time than usual, though. May have been a mistake.
Event warmup:

I'd intended to get into the water, but that didn't work out. Just ran a very relaxed mile.
Swim
  • 17m 36s
  • 586 yards
  • 03m / 100 yards
Comments:

Even though the time and rank are unimpressive, this was a gigantic victory for me. For the first time ever, I completed an open-water swim without panicking. I can always build swim endurance and improve technique, but none of that matters if you can't get out of your head. Today, I got out of my head. Victory!
What would you do differently?:

I just need to do this more. I also felt very dizzy coming out of the water, and almost fell over a couple of times. ??
Transition 1
  • 05m 39s
Comments:

This sucked. As it turns out, having to pause for dry heaves doesn't really do much for your transition time. I probably lost a good 2-3 minutes because of it. Alas!
What would you do differently?:

Not vomit. Oh, and get some genuine triathlon bike shoes and learn how to do the put-your-shoes-on-while-riding thing. Another day.
Bike
  • 47m 55s
  • 14.7 miles
  • 18.41 mile/hr
Comments:

One of the benefits of being in the newbie wave is that I don't get passed on the bike. Again today! Still, I need to spend more time riding and get stronger. Stronger.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Do more hills. Be less of a dork.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Much better than T1, but still fairly slow. Need to work on the 4th discipline, apparently.
What would you do differently?:

See above.
Run
  • 22m 50s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

After the hard (for me) swim, and feeling dizzy and nauseated after the swim,I didn't feel like I could push as hard as I otherwise might have.
What would you do differently?:

With any luck, as my swim improves I won't feel so spent for the last two legs. Let's see next year.
Post race
Warm down:

Some stretching and a very aggressive massage. Dude got to the hot spot on my right hamstring, but almost reduced me to tears. In retrospect, I wouldn't have waited in the chow line, but would have taken off earlier and eaten on my own.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training. I guess I wasn't really convinced I was going to continue being a triathlete, so I didn't really swim or bike as much as I need to. That'll change for the spring season, though.

Hi Tri_Bob!  I enjoyed reading your RR, too!  Congratulations on completing your first OWS without panicking or stopping.  That's awesome!  You will crush your races next season if you work on your swim, no doubt!  Very impressive paces on your bike and run...  And glad there was no vomiting, haha!  :-/

Good job Tri_Bob. That was a tough swim. I usually do lakes/ponds, so I wasn't quite used to the current. The same dizziness happens to me after swims. Every off season I say I'm going to do more swim/bike bricks to get used to it, but I never manage to.
