Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 27m 3s
Overall Rank = 202/265
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 17/33
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5am, had normal breakfast of muesli, yoghurt and fruit, then headed down to the transition opening at 5.30am.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 13m 13s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 46s / 100 meters
Comments:

Happy with swim. Had to swim through a lot of people, wasn't rough but slowed you up a fair bit. Sighting was good.
Never swam with a cap before, after about 200m it really distracted me, hated it!
Had plenty in the tank, being my first though didn't know how I would be affected.
What would you do differently?:

Get used to swimming with a swim cap.
Go a bit harder, reckon there is 2-3 mins to find.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Put shoes on in transition. Had best spot though right next to exit. Also put socks on as paranoid of blisters. Was definitely slow but wanted to make sure I did what I supposed to do. At the mount line heaps of congestion of people trying to get on then it went into a tight turn, I just ran around them all and mounted after the turn, jumped at least 10 people doing that.
What would you do differently?:

Bit more urgency.
Bike
  • 40m
  • 20 kms
  • 30.00 km/hr
Comments:

prior to first turn had a mechanical issue which saw me have to stop once around the corner, that was 2-3 mins. After first lap really got discomfort in lower back. This should of been 30 mins for me, also found it hard to get urgent as you are racing yourself, something I am not really used to in competitive sport. The whole mindset I was way to relaxed.
What would you do differently?:

More urgency
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Got to transition an stuff was every where , took a bit to find my stuff which gave me a mental freeze
What would you do differently?:

Remember to take feet out of shoes while riding, then jump off before dismount.
Run
  • 30m 10s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 02s  min/km
Comments:

IT was what I expected. Again though even at the end I still had a lot left in the tank. The rain sucked but did keep you cool.
What would you do differently?:

Pull my finger out, more urgency!!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Torrential rain, grabbed my gear an dropped 3ks back to where I was staying.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Physically - back spasms on bike, pace on run
Mentally - Didn't have an aggressive mindset which had me accept my performance a the time. Now I have a baseline though I think that will help improve.

Event comments:

Good race, had torrential rain and the organisers had a lot to contend with and did a great job for a rural town carnival. Good atmosphere.
You can see a pic of the transition area at the end of the race an the rain below!

Nice job, I also have blister paranoia and still really don't like running sockless or even biking without. In hindsight, and with the rain, had you gone sockless, how do you think you'd have felt?

Thanks TJ
Yeah hindsight is 20:20

Probably could've and been ok if didn't have socks. I guess I am more thinking as I am at the beginning and not very competitive at this stage when I get my run, bike an swim improved then will start to get more serious about things like that. I hate blisters!!

Cheers

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
