Subject: First Sprint!
Hello everyone!

I just began training for my first sprint triathlon here in Florida. I don't have any competitive experience, but I cycled a lot while in the military after fracturing both ankles. I've been pretty lazy for the past year, and it took a patient ( I work in an orthopedic/sports medicine clinc) who was twice my age to point out the fact that I'm fat and lazy, and should probably go out and start training (If a 60 year-old can do it, what's my excuse?) .With some 'gentle' encouragement, I've decided to work my butt off to not completely embarass myself next April.

I love swimming and cycling, but I'm not a big fan of running. Maybe after I get back into shape and drop these last 20-30 pounds, it'll be more enjoyable. I'm also having a very difficult time adjusting to the heat and humidity here (not a native Floridian, like most Floridians). For now, I'm pushing through it and trying to adapt as I go.

I look forward to hearing more of your stories and learning from your experiences. Perhaps I'll even see some of you this April!

Welcome!  I have actually come to love running in the heat of Florida, but only for those shorter runs.  What I have found helps me is if you have access to a pool immediately after your run to just cool down - just some leisurely swimming or moving around - it helps recovery immensely.  Good luck and let us know if you have any questions.

Welcome to BT!

I'm also in Florida, in Sarasota.  In spite of the summer heat FL is a great place to be a triathlete.

The biggest thing that helped me is being consistent with my training over time,   The first year or so I was very inconsistent and didn't make a lot of progress,  I would skip a week of training and then it felt like I was starting over all the time.   I'd strongly suggest you consider using the log function here on BT.  It makes it easy to record your workouts and measure your progress over time.

Good luck with your training.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

Remeber why we do this, we all have our reasons. I had trained for six months, and it was now time to actually do my first sprint triathlon.

On August 31 I officially became a triathlete. With a big day ahead of me I went to bed early the night before. I woke up at 4:45 am. I was full of energy and ready to go!

It seems that the question arises most everywhere I go and it is usually comes from a 210-pound pot-bellied chain smoker. “Aren’t you to big to be doing triathlons?”
