Subject: Avg times used to calculate volume minutes

I'm jumping to a HIM on 9/16 after completing a Sprint and Oly so far this year. I have been playing with a couple of the HIM programs. I was using the beginner HIM bronze plan but it seemed like the hours were low (echoing forum discussion this week), so I jumped to the silver HIM 20 week plan. Man... the hours were a major jump, and I heard that this uses avg speeds to calculate hours. I tried to do the full 3:45 on the bike averaging around 19 MPH and ended up short by 20 mins. However, I completed 65 miles which is well over the 56 for the HIM.

Long question... but the net is. Is there a way for me to tell how far I should go vs. the time spent in each? It would be great if I could see that I need to run 6 miles instead of 1.5 hours. Because I could run 6 miles in less than an hour. I just want to make sure I complete the distances for a proper build up.

 Thx

You can always do a reality check when you get 2-3 months out for your race.  Look at the 'peak' volumes of the plan and from your current pace, see if the time given will cover the mileage.  If you do this ahead of time, you can adjust things upward.  Also, if the 20 week intermediate HIM is too much overall volume, go back to the beginner HIM and just add some time to 1-2 of your weekly bikes-which is what a lot of people do.

Since this is your first HIM, if you are concerned on the bike volume of the Beginner HIM, adjust it upwards so that the max volume acheived is about 5-10% overdistance training.

I understand you wanting to go rather by 'distance' then 'time'...give us a few more months as mentioned in another recent thread, we will be coming out with a custom plan creator with workout details that is based off of your pace so it will give time and distance based training.
