Veteran 406![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: Masters Team AnxietyA member of the local Masters team saw me at the pool with my instructor. She suggested I join. I'm a novice and intimidated but with a healthy sense of adventure. I'm going tonight to meet some more members of the team, talk to the coach and do what I can with them. Depending on how it goes I am thinking of joining. Thing is they are supposed to take people of all levels but this team is hard core. People have been swimming competitively since childhood. I am a total noob. I love talking to them. They are so encouraging. But talking in the locker room and getting into a lane with them are two very different things. Tonight's the night. Anybody ever done this? Better question, any newbie out there ever done this? How was it? |

Extreme Veteran 346![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Colorado | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyI've done it and have two different experiences. I tried Masters after being talked into it from someone I met in the gym, and it was a large group that had been together awhile. They were very cliquish, not so welcoming once I was in the pool, and the instructor was too busy yucking it up with them to really give me instruction. But after I got some one-on-one lessons to build confidence (and get more familiar with all the strokes), I tried a smaller group and had a much better experience. I'm planning on joining that one fulltime. My advice is to try it, but if you feel uncomfortable or intimidated or ignored, don't give up on Masters altogether, just try another group. Every one is bound to have a different dynamic due to the makeup of the group and the instructor's style. Good luck! |

Melon Presser 52116![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyMany masters teams are used to having swimming noobs join (provided you know how to swim, which is clear) and triathletes who are less experienced in swimming. And it sounds like this is a very friendly group. Take tonight for what it is: an exploratory session. No need to fear: you are there for yourself only. It doesn't matter what the other swimmers are doing. You're there to find out if this is a good fit for you, and if it is, it can only help. |

Elite 3223![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hendersonville | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyI just joined my first Masters group and I was very, very nervous about it. They were very welcoming and I am so happy I joined! I do not know how to do flip turns, I can barely do the other strokes, I am slow as dirt. It didn't matter. Everyone is there to get better and you will get better if you consistently go to Masters. Good luck! |

Veteran 406![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyGood point. They are very friendly in the locker room once they finish. But I'm not sure what to expect during a workout. They all know each other very well. But individually seem friendly. I am taking private lessons and will continue with those. But I practice on my own a couple times a week. Freestyle as many 25s as I can for an hour and/or whatever my instructor wants me to work on. It's ok but I'd really like to have someone watch me and suggest corrections. Plus knowing I'd be meeting a team at a particular time would be very motivating to get me out the door and to the pool. What I'd like is to join but have my own lane next to them. They swim several people to a lane. I know I'd hold things up. So if I had my own lane and my own workout but with the coach's supervision that would be ideal and I'd feel much more comfortable. That's what I'm going to ask for. I'll let you know what they say. There is another team but it's not nearly as convenient. It's a good 20-25 minute drive to where they practice. This one practices two traffic lights away from my house. And thier practice schedule works with the time I have available. So I'd like to make this work. We'll see. I'll let you know what happens. |

Member 52![]() ![]() Madison, WI | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyWAEF - in my experience, the coach should place you in a lane with others on the same level as you. I was placed in lane one with two other people who were fairly beginner themselves. As I progressed, I got moved up to lane 3. So, I wouldn't worry about having to keep up in a lane with the advanced swimmers. The coach should know not to place you there at this time. Good luck! |

Champion 5575![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Butler | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyI do not come from a swimming background and have enjoyed both groups I have swam with. My first one was small but it was nice because it allowed for the coach to keep an eye on everyone. Everyone was very welcoming and lanes were generally divided by your speed. Unfortunately I moved and signed up for a new team that is much larger and has some people that have obviously swam for a long time. We also have completely new people who have never swam laps. Take today for instance, I get there and see my landlord who is a marathoner. I approach him and we talk and apparently he is injured and can't run so he decided to try swimming. He said he has never swam laps before so heads to the slow end of the pool. I look down toward him between sets and the coach is working with him alot. Granted the people there usually swim in lanes with the same people since they generally swim the same speed so they can push each other but sometime things get mixed up and everyone is extremely friendly. |

The masters at my Y is $850 for the year, and does not have a monthly option to pay, so I'd like to see if others have a good experience and perhaps I should stomach the expense or should I just stick with a couple of one on one instructor sessions.

Do they not have a free week trial? Every team I've ever swam with has offered a promotional week to see if you like it. |

Veteran 406![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyOurs is only $35/mo. Cheaper than lessons. My goal is ultimately to replace the individual lessons with the coaching from Masters. Maybe in a few months. I still have a lot to learn so right now I still need the individual attention and instruction. But this could be a fun add-on. We'll see. In about four hours from now... Yikes! Ours is dirt cheap. It's free actually. Of course there is only five of us. |

Nope...they do have two other options than one year though. Pay $425 every six months or $235 a quarter. http://www.wmaymca.com/Masters%20Info.pdf

Master 1790![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tyler, TX | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyDon't worry about things. Just make sure you jump in the lane with the slower swimmers. Keep in mind that many Masters teams depend on triathletes for about a third of their members, and they're often the slower swimmers, so you'll have company. Enjoy!

Extreme Veteran 478![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyI was aquatically challenged when I decided to join my local Masters. The group was friendly enough but I was too out of breath to be very talkative initially. The coach was great working with me and now I get grumpy if I miss my masters workout. Even though I have improved to ~1:30 / 100 yds, I am frequently the slowest of the group and we still have a fun time. Watching and swimming with people of better swim abilities has improved my swim greatly. Beyond the social aspect, I only stay with the group because of the quality coaching. He is always enthuastic to help me with MY goals. Was I intinidated at first? You bet. Am I glad I followed through and stuck with it? Certainly. It's the best value for my swim dollar. |

I was nervous about it and put it off for a week or so but decided I needed to get over it and join since it would do nothing but improve my swim. I have only been to 4 sessions now and I feel I have already progressed quite a bit as far as breathing and stroke are concerned. I still don't like swimming with more than one other person in the lane since I feel like I am slowing them down. I am very happy with the team so far though! I can only imagine where I will be come April/May if I stick with it! |

New user 111![]() | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyI love masters. Luckily for me it's part of my gym membership. I was very intimidated at first but the coach put me into a lane with people near my level and it has been great. Don't be nervous I'm sure in the end you'll love it and wonder why you even had any concerns to begin with. |

Veteran 232![]() ![]() ![]() Rio Rancho, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyI just joined a masters team and am now in my 2nd month. About half of our small group are triathletes and there is quite a widely varying skill levels in the group. The folks in my group have been very friendly and since it was a new group nobody really new anyone a month or so ago, so we are all starting to get know each other now and beginning to chat and so far everyone seems pretty nice and helpful to even the slower guys like me. I am one of the slower folks in the group but I just have to cut some of the sets shorter or swim at a different interval and in a lane with other slower folks but there does not seem to be any stigma with doing this. I would say if you have a chance to do this then go for it. It has been a great motivator for me to get up and in the pool at 5:30am if nothing else! |

The instructor put us in a lane with training wheels...lol. I had not technical experience swimming and the instructors have been very patient. My wife had even less experience than I, and the instructors are helping her learn the proper way to breath...well both of us actually. Our program cost 135 per semester since the program is run at the university pool. |

Champion 19812![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() MA | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyI've been to two master's programs and didn't like either. One was at my Y so free...very clicque and they put all the slow folks in one lane. I can't swim with 3 others when we range from 1:45/100 to over 3:00/100. Coach isn't there much. I actually complained to director of the Y and asked the question if they pay him in full since he isn't there long or often. He is no longer there. I need to check out the new coach. Other master's program I went to was 90% of triathletes. It was far away. I went to a clinic put on by the coach who is a pro triathlete. I figured then going to master's I could follow up on what I learned. I got stuck in my own lane. He helped me some first few times but in time ignored me. No reason for me to drive and be gone for 3.5 hours for no help. I have a lead on new master's program that is smaller. She works on technique if time permits and coachs one of the best kids swim team around and offers private lessons. I'm willing to try again. |

Veteran 406![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Masters Team AnxietyWell they let me join. I pay per session. $3.50 They are giving me a modified workout becuase I don't know all the strokes yet. The coach is really friendly. She told me to let her know what my instructor has me working on and she will give me pointers. I can keep doing my 25s freestyle until I am ready to try something new. So that makes it completely manageable and less intimidating. They have a slow lane and one of the swimmers stops at the wall after each 25. So it's not as bad as I thought. I thought I would be completely out of my league but everyone was really nice and welcoming. I am doing pay as you go, so if I change my mind it's no big deal. But so far so good. Their example and encouragment got me to swim longer than I ever have before. Almost double what I've done before. They told me just add five minutes each week and my endurance will gradually improve. I am looking forward to doing this again. |
