Subject: 30 Day Nutrtion Challenge
I have joined Matt's (trimore) 30day/30min Challenge which is designed to focus on consistency in exercising, and it occurred to me that it would be a great format to also work on consistency in nutrition. So I hope Matt doesn't mind, but I thought I would set up a mirror 30 day challenge for nutrition. So for anyone out there who, like me, struggles with sticking to their eating plan on a consistent basis, I invite you to join me!

Define your nutritional goals for the day - whether it's to stay within a certain calorie limit, point limit, or to eat/avoid certain foods. Stay on track, and you earn:
-1 point for each day that you meet your goal
-At any point, if you do 5 days in a row, there will be a 1 point bonus.
-At any point, if you do 10 days in a row, there will be a 3 point bonus.
-At any point, if you do 15 days in a row, there will be a 6 point bonus
-20 days, 10 points.
-30 days, 20 points
-Each bonus resets that particular bonus counter.
-If you complete 10 days, you only get the 10 day bonus, not the 2nd 5 day and 10 day.

Start date is today (to mirror the other challenge), but people can join in any time. If you want in, send me a private message with your email address so I can add you to the Google Spreadsheet.

Reply to this post and tell a little about yourself, your struggle and what you hope to accomplish during this challenge. We can use this thread to post updates on our progress, successes and challenges - this will be our place to help each other and cheer each other on.

Eat well!

I am at the start of a long journey to take off a lot of weight. Right now, the weight comes off fairly easily when I stick to my plan. But there are usually one or two days a week where I mess up and put some of that weight back on, which I then have to re-lose. I know that it's going to get harder to lose weight as time goes on, and I won't be able to still make progress with these off days. So, the main thing I need to work on is consistency, and I hope this little challenge will help keep me focused on that goal.Lori

For me, my biggest challenge with nutrition is staying away from the sodas and other sugar drinks.  I can even over do it on gatorade on days when working outside alot.  I like fast food too.

On my journey where I lost about 35lbs over 1 year, I had the most weight loss when I completely stayed away from the sodas and other sugar drinks like sweet tea.

So my nutrition goal is 3 fold
1. No sugar drinks except for gatorade needed during heavy sweat loss during exersize or working outside (I am in Florida afterall) and one coffee with sugar in the morning.

2. No fast food for lunch.  Meaning McDs, Checkers, Wendy's, Burger King, etc.  Subway is ok if it is a 6" sub with baked chips and water.  If I have no choice but a fast food joint, I must choose a "healthy" option although I think I would rather go hungry than give my $ to a fast food joint for a salad.    Moes is OK, no more than once a week as long as it is the smaller Joey Jr burrito.  I will go into withdraws without a moes burrito and chips.

3.  No deserts, period.

All of that will be a real challenge for me.  I usually could maintain this for about 2 weeks in the past and then would fall.

I am up for a 30 day nutrition challenge, as I am also doing the 30 day/30 min challenge.  I have about 30 pounds to lose.  I joined Weight Watchers a couple of weeks ago, but work has been really stressful and I haven't followed the plan and I can make lots of other excuses if anyone wants to hear them.

My goal is to follow the WW plan consistently.

Thanks for setting this up!

Awesome - welcome everyone! It occurred to me that I should specify what my eating goals are. For this week, my goal is to average no more than 1,600 calories per day. My calories vary from day to day - 1,600/day on circuit training days (4x/week), 1,400/day on rest days (2x/week), and one high-calorie day of 2,000 calories.

My goals for the week are
--eat lunch
--have a salad every day
--plan my after dinner snack and stick to the plan

I've had lunch today, so I've got a third of my goals done!

I get busy during the day and forget to eat lunch. Then after dinner I pig out! I think it's also just a bad rut I'm in--I get on the couch and on the lounge chair outside, read, and gotta eat. Not because I'm hungry, just because it's mindless habit. So this is a real challenge for me.

I'm aiming to lose about 50 pounds, at any rate go from size 16 to size 6. It's gonna take awhile!

Good luck, everyone,
Mary

Mary (A Little Madness) & Derek (dcb5695), please pm your email to me and I will send you the link to the spreadsheet (in Google docs, I list your email as authorized to edit the document, so you can update it with your progress).Matt (trimore), I see you earned your point today - congrats! I did not do very well with my eating this afternoon, so I do not get my point today. But I have my meals all planned out and ready to go tomorrow!

I just sent you my email. I get my point for today!!! I'm so happy--I successfully navigated after-dinner eating, ate to plan.
The raspberries were very good.Laughing And I had a salad with dinner. Those two, along with eating lunch, makes a successful day.

Good luck,

I got my point today! I ate lunch, had a salad--big chef salad for dinner, and ate ok after dinner. The pistachios were calling my name but I ate to plan after dinner.

I haven't been able to access the Google doc but I'm 2 or 2 and mighty happy. Eating to plan is big for me!

Good luck, everyone.
Mary

I did not do well today.  Tomorrow is going to be tough as well.

I had to get up at 4am to go to work early to do some server stuff and have to do the same tomorrow.  I had my one coffee & bagel at 5am but by 9-10am I was really dragging so I got a soda........   Then had some sweet tea at lunch and had a cookie that my 6 yr old daughter said she made for me.  How can I say no to that.

Mary - I checked and your email is listed as one of the authorized users of the doc, so I don't understand why you can't get in. I'll try sending you another invitation. I put your 2 points on the sheet - good work!

I got my point yesterday! My calorie goal was 1,600; I ate 1,532.

Matt, I'm familiar with those cookie-wielding children - lol! My 5-year-old is like that - she wants to share her food with you, and is absolutely adamant that you eat it whether you want it or not!

Also, everyone should be able to view and edit the spreadsheet at this link.

Well dang, I don't get my point today.Yell I forgot to each lunch. And what was really painful is the fact that I had it all ready, it was what was left of my chef salad from last night. So I would've checked off two of my weekly goals if I'd eaten it: 1) eat lunch 2) have a salad every day.

When I realized I'd lost my point for the day, I was all set to blow off the rest--eat what I wanted after dinner and forget the salad. But I vaguely remembered this whole thing had something to do with fitness and health. So good girl that I am (!), I had a salad with dinner and ate to plan after dinner.

Hope your day went well!

Way to go, Mary - good work!

I did not give myself a point for each of the last two days.    I was feeling stressed out by a number of things, and decided that I was going to give myself some leeway and not worry about eating perfectly.  Now, the good news is that I did not jsut let my eating get out of control.  I still limited the amount I was eating and tried to make healthier choices.  But I didn't count every calorie, and that's why I'm not giving myself the points.  I must have done OK because the scale has held steady.   I will get back to calorie counting today.

Tri365, that's really smart to give yourself leeway. I hope the stressful stuff works out ok.

I ate lunch and had a salad with dinner and [drumroll] I didn't eat at all after dinner. The sky didn't fall either.Surprised It's such an ingrained part of my day--after dinner, flop on the couch or the lounge chair outside, read and eat.

I see possibilities here.

Good work, Mary! We are definitely creatures of habit. lol

I get a point for yesterday; my calorie goal was 1,400 and I ate 1,364. I really struggled in the evening, too. The girls were just not unwinding or going to sleep, and I had that deadly combination of frustration + tired that makes me feel suddenly ravenous. I debated with myself, and knowing that I would lose my point for the day was one of the arguments I used to convince myself not to give in.

I got in my lunch, my salad, and eating to plan this evening--though that was hard. This is making a real difference in my eating habits.

Tri365, good going on the calories and frustration-handling!

Glad you got your point!

I did ok today--lunch/salad/after dinner. I think next week I will change up my goals to add more challenge. I thought these three would be challenge enough all month!

We're doing good!

Way to go! You've got a nice streak going there - you'll get your first bonus point today! I read somewhere that changing you habits gets easier after sticking with it for 4 days. Feel free to change/add to your challenge at any time, but beware of trying to do too much, too fast (I know that I have a tendency to do that). You want to give yourself plenty of time to make sure your new habit has a good, solid foundation before you try to build the next level - I've heard that it takes 21 days to make a new habit.

I'm so glad you're doing this challenge with me, because I know it's really helping me. I really don't want to put a zero on that chart at the end of the day, and knowing that helps when my motivation is low.

Got my point for yesterday. Calorie goal was 1,600; I ate 1,574. Scale rewarded me, too, with a 3.4 pound loss this week!

Tri365, good going with the 3+ pounds!!

I'm just going to change one thing--one day of eating after dinner, then the next day no eating after dinner. Good for my character.

I don't seem to be losing. Actually I seem to be gaining. I may have to break down and log my food, which I truly hate. On the other hand, I have a history of losing, then gaining, then losing. Maybe my body needs a little more time.

I'm glad you started the challenge, Tri365. It has really made me conscious of better eating patterns. For that alone it's worth it, even without the weightloss.
