Subject: swimmer's shoulder

forgive me if this is already a thread somewhere. i looked, and couldn't find one.

swimmer's shoulder (rotator cuff)...i thought i had it beat but then the other night i'm playing tennis and aggravate it again, even worse. since hurting it the first time it's never been quite right, but i've learned to manage it and keep going. but now i'm more concerned. i have three more tri events this summer, the last one being a half ironman in september. you know the sob story - i can't stop training, if i can just nurse it through september, etc...

so, has anyone else had to or currently dealing with this? is ibuprofen and applying the RICE method basically what you do? any suggestions?

First, find a doc or physical therapist to do a good exam to confirm it is rotator cuff tendinitis/tendinosis and not something worse (i.e. partial tear).  Then get instruction on a good rotator cuff strengthening and scapular stabilization program.  Should be able to do the rehab while continuing to train without doing too much harm.

I know this is an old thread, but...

You should get some instruction on your swim stroke.  An improper stroke will overstress your rotator cuff.

Hello. Yup, I've dealth with it in the past. A couple of suggestions:

 1. Get a copy of The Seven Minute Rotator Cuff. It's a great book that'll move you from rehab to maintenance and beyond. Start out *slow.* I did eeny teeny weights at first--if any--and still don't do much in the weight category as there are many small muscles in the rotator cuff.

2. I'd also get a copy of Total Immersion. It helps you to improve swimming skills where you more of your "core" vs. shoulders.

I injured my shoulder due to overuse and improper fly--this was about ten years ago. I've remained injury free (knock wood) but it took over six months to be healed--shoulders take time. You may need a few months of nothing before you start in with anything.

You will heal!!
