Subject:No tri bikes in the Beijing Olympic Triathlon
Just wondering , why riders in the olympics triathlon in Beijing are all on road bikes with clip on aero bars, I also noticed that in all ITU standard events the riders are all on road bikes as well.
Just wondering if there is a general rule or if the event is considered too short for a true tri bike race.

The rules allow drafting on the bike. Only the rider in the lead gets the benefit of being fully aero. The other riders need to be able to handle their bikes in a tight group. Since the lead changes frequently, the clip on bars are used when riding in the lead.

The Olympic Triathlon is governed by the I.T.U. or International Triathlon Union. Their primary goal is the ITU World Cup and, every four years, the Olympic Triathlon. The ITU has a seperate set of rules for their triathlon format that includes no aerobars that protrude past the brake lever hoods.
