Subject: Rail Trails Near Long Island

I'm looking for "rail trails" or something similar near Long Island or NYC.  I've done some googling, but the signal-to-noise ratio is really low. 

Basically I'm trying to get some bike time with the wife without putting her on trails that would overwhelm her (or me - I'm still new to this) and would also make a nice day out.  So Stillwell is out.  I don't mind driving a little bit, but I'd like something that's doable in a day trip.

FWIW - I have a mountain bike and she has an older hybrid (no suspension).

Hey Bruce, here's a link that you may find helpful: New York Rail Trails. 

The only one I've ever been on is the Heritage Trail in Goshen because I live near there. My 12 year old son likes it because it's very flat. It's nice, but I don't know if it's worth a trip from LI, but maybe you could try some of the trails in Westchester.

Have you considered rocky point?

Although the Rocky Point trails are known as fast, technical single tracks, there are actually a few family trails there and the trail heads are clearly marked as long as you park in the "25a west" parking lot. If you need directions let me know. But, basically, take the LIE to exit 63- (cr83) go north all the way to the end and you will be at 25a. Take 25a east for (Id guess) 6 miles or so. Pass over Rocky Point rd. (7-11 and Kohls on the corner) continue east onto the 25a bypass and the parking lot is about .25 miles from there... really easy to spot on the south side (right hand side) of the road. From the parking lot, you should be able to easily spot the family trail heads. They are relatively wide, flat and smooth.

Thanks guys -

I also found a website, www.traillink.com, that's run by the rails to trails conservancy.  I looks good, but the maps are messed up on my PC for some reason.

I'll check out rocky point - I'm just getting into biking, and no nearly nothing about where to go on the island.  I know I can hook up with others for group rides, but I'm looking for something leisurely I can do with SWMBO
