Does anyone know of a place that lists next years local races. I'm looking for a sprint in early spring to start the season and would like to have an idea.

you mean like www.tribc.org look for "Race Calendar" in the dropdown box. You can see this years races, which will give you a pretty good idea of what you can expect for next year.

Typically in April/May there are many tris that involve doing the swim portion in a swimming pool. June is when the outdoor tris start to appear. Note: Cultus Lake Tri is moving to a later date.
