Subject: Getting over a mental block
On the run portion of my upcoming tri, there is a long section that is uphill. At the end of the uphill portion there is about 500-600 yard downhill/flat section that goes till the end. I have a lot of energy as I reach the end of the uphill area, but once I make the turn downhill, all my energy seems to disapear. I am thinking this is a mental block of some sorts. If so any tips of how to overcome it. Or, could this be a physical thing?

Hrm. Most likely either mental or an alteration in your running style, instead of actually running down the hill, you're braking down the hill. By that I mean running by leaning back a bit, landing more on your heels, that kind of thing. That will wear you out quick, especially at the end of a run.

The reason that your energy disappears is because you're running a long section that is uphill.

when you exert yourself there is generally a delay between the action and the perceived "feeling" of exhaustion. This is due to the time it takes for the muscles to send signals to the brain requesting the body to stop putting them under such pressure, so they can recover.

What you will need to do is train your body to cope with this exact type of hill, so when you tackle the hill, instead of your brain saying "OK the hard part is over, lets shut down for a bit now" it says "OK we just did a nasty uphill and this is usually followed by another sprint exertion so lets send even more blood and oxygen to the muscles"

it sounds strange but muscles have a "memory" and they learn from experience- people how have a recurring injury will tell you this is true!

perhaps you could experiment with eating a gel at certain distances before the hill so it kicks in right at the top, ready for your sprint finish

good luck
