Subject: 2 beat kick

I've been working on trying to get the 2 beat kick down, but just can't seem to get the hang of it.  I normally don't kick at all, and just let my legs dangle behind me, but it seems that doing some kicking is supposed to improve balance and rotation in the water.  I watched some youtube videos, and it didn't look that difficult, but I tried to do it in the pool today, and my legs just seemed to thrash around aimlessly.  Any drills or advice on improve this?  Doing kickboard sets?  Thanks everyone!

Take this with a BIG grain of salt because I *just* figured out how to do it (and I think I'm doing it sorta right).  I used a pull buoy to get my arm strokes down pat without having to think of my legs and noticed that if I was rotating enough, my hips were moving to help with that.  It was then easier to kick as an extension of my hip motion once I wasn't using the buoy.  So my suggestion is to use a buoy and pay attention to what your hips are doing if the rest of your body is right- then try without the buoy.  Then again, I could be doing it all wrong.

Actually I would not recommend using a kickboard. It is all about finding the rhythm with your stroke and that would be impossible without stroking.

I agree it will help your balance over not kicking.

Try to stroke and kick slowly and find the rhythm. I know this doesn't sound very clear. It is a stroke, kick, stroke, kick. Really slow down your kick.

No, I think that's a pretty good idea. You can still kick with a buoy (although not as well). Use the buoy to learn the timing of the stroke without having struggle with balance, etc.

The other thing that might work in addition to the buoy is to swim regular freestyle with fins. By doing the 2 beat with fins on you can really see the impact of each kick, which may help you place it/time it better.
