I have been working really hard to get ready for this Sprint (.8K/25K/5K) and I am starting to get very nervous.  I gave blood on Monday and my training this week has been terrible.  Did not workout on Monday at all, Swim Tuesday was good but nothing left for a ride, Weds my heart rate shot up to 165 almost as soon as I took off (typically stays around 150-155) and thursday feeling a little better but only swam (800 Meters Drills/800 Timed).  I will run again tonight and hope it improves over Weds.

So that is that...could anyone offer any suggestions on how I should get ready during these last 3 weeks?  See below for what a typical week looks like, I am thinking the week prior I wont do much of anything to strenous only because this is what I read.  What does that mean though, can I go for a light swim and work on technique only, perhaps walking instead of running, how about some interval training?  Help please!!! I am so nervous about this I feel like I am going to puke everytime I think about it.

I have had a few setbacks including losing my bike in a rear-end collision about 3 weeks ago which is why I am spinning for now.  Should have a new bike by next weekend.

M, W, F - Run 3-4 Miles
Tue,Thur - Swim 800 Meters Drills, 800 Meters Race Pace, 1 Hour Spinning Class
Sat - Rest
Sun - Some sort of activity ie Rode the Tri Bike course last weekend on a loaner bike.

You'll do fine.  Everyone is nervous before a race and their first race most of all.  You should taper the week before the race.  If it is an OWS then hopefully you've had a chance to practice in open water, some place other than the pool.  Plan what you are going to take to the race and have it all ready to go so that the night before you aren't running around like a crazy person.

Lastly, relax and have fun and welcome to the sport of triathlons.

I am sure you are feeling a bit off this week b/c you just gave blood.  Drink lots of fluids and think about increading your iron intake.

Your schedule seems fine for the next two weeks.  On the week before the event, make sure to taper.  For example, if your race is on a Saturday morning, I wouldn't do a hard workout after the previous Wednesday morning.  On Thursday and Friday you can do a light workout if you think it helps take the edge off your nerves, but really all your training is done at that point.  And don't forget to rest!  Try to get extra sleep that whole week before the event, b/c you may not sleep well the actual night before.

Another tip is to think about your transitions.  Visualize what you need and in what order you will do things.  Don't go crazy and feel like you need to have your shoes already clipped on your bike or all the other tricks that the pros do.  Just have a plan.

Just enjoy the excitement and nervousness!  That's all part of the experience!
