Subject: swimming efficiency question
I've never been a great swimmer (and have in fact never taken a lesson so don't know proper...well, anything), although I've been doing triathlons for 8 years. I just watched Terry Laughlin's 'Total Immersion' (Part 2) and am absolutely fascinated and determined to get much better by trying to learn what he suggests.

However, while watching the part of him swimming in the pool, I noticed that his kick-stroke coordination was such that when he kicked his left leg he drove his right arm into the water and when he kicked his right leg he drove his left arm into the water. Is this combination the most efficient and able to generate more power than right kick right stroke or left kick and left stroke? Since I have decided to start from scratch with my stroke, I want to make sure that I am re-learning the most efficient way.

Thanks!

I usually have a 2 beat kick every time I put my hand in the water. So for a full cycle of one arm 360 degrees, I kick 4 times.

But if a swim coach says to do that, I'd definitely go with that advice...

I am not a great swimmer but exactly what I am targetting.  Kick with with reach.  I watch a lot of youtube videos and have seen this with some of the elite simmers.

So with each stroke you mean 2 kicks per one arm cycle?

I'm thinking that might be the best way (although so foreign to me because before I was doing around 6 kicks!) because I breathe bilaterally... After practicing 4 kicks per cycle ysterday I started to worry that I might develop a biomechanical issue if I am breathing on the right with hand outstretched and right leg kicking and on the left with left hand outstretched and right leg kicking...does this make sense? Maybe I am being too overanalytical...

Thanks to both of you for your advice!
