Subject: Swimming Question
I am training for my first sprint, Aug. 1, and have had some thoughts on things. This particular race will use a pool for the 500M swim but I am looking at another race one month later that will use a lake.
My question is, how do you all take off at once in the lake without getting kicked, beat, knocked out, etc.?
Can you wait until the largest part of the group goes, and then go, since the times are chip-recorded anyway?
Thanks for the help.

It depends.  Some races have in-water starts, some have out-of-water starts.  Generally with lakes/rivers, they have an in-water start where you tread water for a couple minutes before the gun goes off, then it's pandemonium.  If you're in the middle of the group, you will get bumped, kicked and hit, but its not on purpose, its just incidental contact.  If you want to avoid it, set yourself to the back and to the side and let the pack go.  There's no rules against waiting for 30 seconds for the group to go which some beginners do so they don't get mixed in with the churn.

If its an out-of-water start (usually reserved for ocean swims), you stand behind a line, and when the gun goes off, everyone runs into the water like its Baywatch, high stepping the waves then dolphin swims until you get out past the surf.

You'll have some contact if you start in the pack.  Well, if you're fast, you can start at the front and just get in front of everybody.  A good option to avoid the washing machine is to start in the back or off to the side.  You will lose some time because your clock starts when your wave starts.  There isn't a mat underwater or anything like that.  However, for someone not comfortable swimming in a wave start format, there might be more time lost fighting it out in a big pack.

If your pool swim is a snake swim, I'd almost bet there'd be more contact with that one.

Thanks for the replies, I will just have to see how it is setup/organized for the lake swim.

My pool swim is 6 lanes with 2 to a lane.
