Subject: Best Tri Bike...??
Hey BTer's...

i am looking to find a older year model tri/TT bike...wondering what people would recommend and where people would recommend to look...there are about a million tri sites but they are all selling 2009/2010 models

i am 6'-1" 180 lbs, and i ride a 60cm frame in my trek...

any help would be wonderful...just lookin for people's input since there isn't too much of a TT bike demand in Madison, WI...

Thanks

Wow.  That's a lot of question with no clear answer.  There a a ton of tri bikes, and most of them have positive attributes.  There are always deals to be found on barely used ones, as a lot of triathletes trade in for the latest greatest fad.  Drawback is you need to know what you're looking for.

First of all, go to a tri shop and get fit.  Figure out what kind of stack and rech work for you (see SLowtwitch for an explanation).  That will elminate about half the bikes out there.  Then go ride everything you can.  Go to every bike store you see, and ride every tri bike you can, even if its above your price range.

Eventually you will narrow down to what you like, and you'll be ready when you find the deal.

FWIW, I've bought 4 tri bikes off eBay with great success.  #1 was local and I rode it before buying.  #2 was from a dealer and I knew al about it.  #3 was a frame i biult myself.  #4 (current race bike) was a year old model which I got brand new from a dealer for a screaming low price.  I think the secret here is knowing what you want, and knowing what a reasonable price is.

Good luck!

.. is the tri bike that fits YOU!

Seriously, recommending one brand over another if you have never been on a tri bike can't be done... if you had a bike previously and could tell a bit how that fit, then maybe (but just maybe) you could receive some decent advise.

I would HIGHLY recommend that you visit one of the local stores and talk to them, maybe try out some bikes and get a feeling for them. Then you could go home, read up on the geometry and start to look. At least you can make an educated guess on a used bike then.

Best would be to get a professional fit first, then go out and find a bike that fits those numbers.
