Subject: Indoor Trainer Noise

I was wondering if anyone that lives in an apartment/condo owns a trainer, and if so how loud is it?  I am looking at purchasing one, but live on the second floor and think that it may cause some issues with the person below me.

First, get a Fluid trainer as those are much more quite. Second, get a trainer specific tire (Continental HomeTrainer is a good one) which is not only be quiter, it will also stand up to the temperature and not spread black rubber dust all over the room, plus it won't slip which means that you will ride more like you do outdoors. And third, try to isolate the trainer from the floor by either using a trainer specific mat (basically a rubber compound mat) or built an isolation platform.

I use my CycleOps magneto in an apartment.  I put a folded thick yoga mat under the trainer to minimize noise transfer to my neighbours and I only train at decent hours (9am to 10pm).  Sprint workouts are much noisier than threshold or recovery rides.  It doesn't wake my 4yo son at night as long as I don't aim the sound down the hallway.
