Pre-race routine:

My husband and kids had stayed up north in NH so I was on my own for this race. The alarm woke me at 4:15 and I took the dogs outside for a run around. Oatmeal and gatorade for breakfast. I was unusually thirsty this morning and drank almost a whole bottle before leaving the house. I guess I didn't hydrate as well as I thought I did the night before. I had a leisurely drive down to Webster where, as I approached the exit I started seeing more and more cars with bikes! To my luck I ran into Max in the parking lot carrying the BT sign he had put together. It was great to walk to the race with him, which helped keep me focussed and not to nervy!
Event warmup:

I spent a bit of time getting transition set up...warming up was a simple matter of walking from one end of transition to the other. It was a little diconcerting to see how far I was going to have to run in my cleats, on the gravel/sand, pushing my bike. With a low number I was near the beach but far from the bike exit. I went to the beach and swam a little before getting ready to start.
Swim
  • 11m 53s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

With so many women this swim is quite a challenge. I tried to stay left and get out in front and this was a good strategy. I didn't run into too much traffic but there were certainly people to navigate through the whole swim.
Transition 1
  • 05m 35s
Comments:

The transition area was WAY to big. While I was close to my bike from the swim I had quite a distance to go to exit transition. I had to push the bike for a good quarter mile before being able to get on. This added to the transition time. Getting things on and off wasn't too much of a problem. I took the time to have a good drink of Gatorade as I knew I wouldn't get around to it until after "the hill".
What would you do differently?:

I would hope there would be a way to make the transition area a little more "equal". There was lots of parking space that could have been utilized for this purpose.
Bike
  • 45m 7s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 16.49 mile/hr
Comments:

This bike course is challenging. It was even more so with so many athletes on the course at any time. The road was in pretty rough shape for the first part, but once you get past the hill then the conditions improve and it is a nice ride. I felt good on the bike and tried to get comfortable on the aerobars as much as I could.
What would you do differently?:

Keep pedalling!
Transition 2
  • 03m 47s
Comments:

Again, I had a long way down through transition before I got to my rack. While the rule was that you were to walk through transition, many others were running and forcing people to step aside. Once at my bike rack I had a good transition. I was a bit worried as I had developed a pretty big blister on my heel.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Continue to work on doing everything faster and more efficient.
Run
  • 26m 35s
  • 2.9 miles
  • 09m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

I had been working on just maintaining a good consitent pace so I didn't have to stopp and walk. I also think the interval training I have been working on has helped alot. I had a good run.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on steady pace and endurance training.
Post race
Warm down:

After the race was over, I walked around and tried to see where everyone was in the race. I met up with Max and we cheered a few BTers home. There was lots going on and it was hard to spot everyone. I called the husband and kids while waiting to get out of transition. Found out his transmissin had died and he was sitting in a gas station in NH waitining for me to come and pick him up...So as soon as I got out of transition I headed north to "rescue" him!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I had a good race. I am focussing more on what I can do well (like swimming) and how to improve on those "problem areas".

Event comments:

I enjoyed this race. However I found that with so many athletes it became difficult sometimes to perform well. It would be nice to have a more effective transition area. Awesome spectators!

I could tell you were only just a "bit" nervous. I had to speed-walk to keep up to you going from the parking lot to the race!

Great race report and congrats on a strong finish too. You did great in all 3 of the events! I can't believe how good all the BT women looked...we got some seriously good triathletes here!

Great Race!!

You did great at the swim....really fast..plus on the bike and run. Sounds like a challenging race with so many triathletes.

Did you find that the support and women only event was positive environment?

Congratulations on a great race! I am glad I got to meet you and the other ladies throughout the day. That made it so much nicer since my husband and kids didn't make it either. Do you think you would do this race again? If I am here next summer I would consider it as long as I don't remind myself about that hill!
