Set Up, Inc.
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 30m 47s
Overall Rank = 304/539
Age Group = Novice Men
Age Group Rank = 22/60
Pre-race routine:

Ate a cliff bar and a granola bar, drove to race, setup transition and got marked
Event warmup:

All I could really do was some quick stretching while waiting in line for the buses to take us to the swim start.
Swim
  • 27m 24s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

I not that great of a swimmer and since this was my longest open water swim to date, I just took it easy and kept my breathing regular. My navigation was pretty good and I didn't have to sight too often.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get some swim coaching my swim is the weakest part of every race so far.
Transition 1
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

Pretty good transition. I went without socks on the bike and that helped my T1 quite a bit
What would you do differently?:

Maybe learn how to get into my shoes after I'm already on the bike.
Bike
  • 33m 5s
  • 12 miles
  • 21.76 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my first race with my new bike, and it was awesome except for one thing that was completely my fault. My chain fell off just after T1 as soon as I shifted up to the big chain ring, so that hurt my time 30-60sec. Moral of the story don't make an adjustment to you bike on the trainer without trying it out on the road afterword.

The only bad thing about having a new bike it I won't be that guy that does really well for racing on a mountain bike anymore. ;)
What would you do differently?:

Make sure my bike is adjusted so my chain doesn't fall off. :)
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

This is where my race took a total nose dive.
Everything went well in T2 up to the point that I ran off with my helmut on and without my number strap.
What would you do differently?:

Not be an idiot.
Run
  • 25m 28s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

The run started off pretty badly with me realizing I still had on my helmut and that I was sans number strap just after I had left the transition area, then wasting another 30-60 seconds trying to figure out what to do.
What would you do differently?:

Once again not be an idiot. It cost me a minute penalty and another 30 to 60 seconds milling around in confusion.
Post race
Warm down:

A little stretching while watching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I was a little over confident since this was my third race and I thought I had it down, so I wasn't concentrating on what I was doing in T2 and this cost me at least 1 1/2 minutes.

Event comments:

I was really pleased with my physical effort especially on the bike, and the swim went better than I expected, but I was really disapointed in my brain fade in T2.

Nice race David...I finished a minute behind you. Sorry about you're penalty. Great bike time, that's my weakness. I had fun, especially the swim. I did not like the tight lanes starting and finishing the bike. That was my last tri in 05...next year we'll all have to meet pre or post race sometime.

You had the most unique T2 report of this race.. My friend said he was yelling at you about your helmet. Hope you got it back from the cop. It was good seeing you there, in the same bike rack no less.. Great job on the bike.. I feel better now that you kick my ass with that cool ride, rather then kicking it with your mtn. bike

Couldn't you have just finished the race with the helmet on?

No really.  Good job!
