US Half Triathlon Championship - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

View Member's Race Log
Smithville (Kansas City), Missouri
United States
UltraMax
74F / 23C
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 48m 39s
Overall Rank = 152/275
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 8/20
Pre-race routine:

5 am wakeup to eat, had yogurt with walnuts, accelerade, and a protein shake, sipped some Gatorade and had a banana. I think this was a contributing factor to the run, not enough calories in, need some startch like a bagel or pancakes or something!!! 2E caps before the swim
Event warmup:

Short run with Kari along the path, followed by a 10 minute bike ride whrn the sun came up. Before the swim got about 5 minutes of warm-up. Good to go, and was well hydrated
Swim
  • 34m 35s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim felt really good, got in some awesome drafting, took a few good kicks/collisions since there was only two waves, one female one male so they were rather large.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, might try and find a slightly faster person to draft off of, but not much else felt great coming out of the swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

They had we suit strippers so that made it really easy, actually took a few extra seconds to get everything correct and say hi to Kari and the kids, they were really excited.
What would you do differently?:

Take some ecaps before the ride, the heat was picking up
Bike
  • 2h 46m 7s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.23 mile/hr
Comments:

Flat at mile 37 and had to wait for bike shop van to help, did not bring a spare tubular, lost 6:59 to the flat. After the flat I went out kind of hard to make up time which was also probably an error. Other than that I would try to take in some more fluids and ecaps on the bike, also needed more nutrition. Intake was 4 gels, 24 oz accelerade, 32 oz of Gatorade, 64 oz of water)
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Had to stop for a second to put on amphipod and take 2 ecaps, was way hot by now (87 degrees). Said hi to kids and Kari and gave mom a high 5 on the way out!!
Run
  • 2h 23m 11s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Stomach quit and was way difficult to take in fluids after 4th mile, I felt like I was overheating also and having a difficult time cooling off, began to walk uphill and run on the flats and down hills.
What would you do differently?:

I think I need to add more calories and fluids in the morning to help later with the run. Also I had very high expectations on the run and need to re-look what I can do after 56 miles on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much, found some shade and the family showed up, Ryan did a great job dumping water over my head and Allie loved the medal. Mom and Kari took great care of me after the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Kind of embedded this throughout the report, calores and fluid intake!!

Event comments:

Can wait for the next 1/2 Ironman

Jim,

I was the guy (Jared) that was with you for about 80% of the "run". I had high expectations for the run too, so I hear you on rethinking what can be done after the bike. But the good news is that we have room to improve.

Good job and congrats on the finish. .. thanks for talking with me out there, it helped.

Jim,

It was pretty toasty out there on the run for sure.  The heat took it's toll on everyone that day.  I had to force down water to keep hydrated on the run.

A good race in some trying conditions.

What a race, it looked pretty tough...congrats on your finish!
You tried hard on the run and it just wasn't in the carbs or carbs for the day.
More cals on the bike will help, but I still really admire your effort!!!

And it's neat that you were running with another BT'er for a good portion of it.

Best of luck on your next 1/2-IRON effort, -Sunny
