Pre-race routine:

Always like to look around and see how other triathletes are setting up. Being a longer race I usually bring GU on the bike. Nice new purchase for this road trip was the Bento Box. A very handy little box that is velcro'd to the top tube on the bike. Combined with my new aero water bottle food and hydration were much better in this event than I would have expected. Very nice.
Event warmup:

In order to get bike situated and get ready I was able to do some light running and a bit of swimming to get the HR up before the start. Mainly I like to relax and 15 minutes before the start I eat my GU and then go and swim out a bit. Then I come back and make sure I have 5 minutes to relax before my wave starts.
Swim
  • 58m 15s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

I am not a good swimmer! I got out of the water as slow as anyone, BUT I felt very comfortable and ready to get into the next stage of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get mechanics of swimming down.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

I get on the bike and get moving down the road fine. I could get better at getting in the shoes and situated. I am moving down the road and that is a bonus.
What would you do differently?:

Generally happy with T1
Bike
  • 2h 42m 21s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was solid. I impressed myself with how well it went. I didn't think I could hold a 20+ average.
What would you do differently?:

Considering the amount of training I am able to get in the only thing I could improve would be more long rides.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

MAJOR FUBAR! I forgot my race belt coming out of T2. I didn't realize until I was over a mile out. That cost me 4 minute penalty. Otherwise, a generally good T2.
Run
  • 2h 13m 22s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Very disappointing. Started out too fast. 23 minutes for the first 5km. Slowly worked my way down from there. First 9 miles in 1:15. Last 4 miles in 1 hour.
What would you do differently?:

More long runs going into event. Coming out of RAGBRAI I only had one 10 mile run. That wasn't enought to carry me through this type of event. I did have many shorter runs though. That did help.
Post race
Warm down:

Didn't really do one.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mainly training.

Event comments:

I'll be back! Next time I'll be a little better on the preparation side.

Tom, I was recently observing an Oly distance race and couldn't believe the number of people who forgot their race belt. At that race it was a DQ infraction. Reminded several to return to trans and get it because I couldn't imagine getting finished with a good time only to be DQed. I wrap mine around my aero bars and wear it out of T1. But then I'm slow lol. Good race and good report.

Good race report and very respectable times.

The Piman is on my list for next year.  Can you post more details on the race?  Describe the swim, bike and run course in detail.  I've heard that its hilly, windy and no shade.  The more details the better.  How well was it supported?

Thanks!
