Total Time = 57m 57s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

I really don't have one, except to get in the water to get used to the temperature and do some warmup swimming.
Event warmup:

I got in the water and did some short freestyle swims and some breaststroke.
Swim
  • 57m 57s
  • 2500 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was second in my age group for the 2500 meters but most of the contestants swam the 5K.
What would you do differently?:

Swim harder all the way. In open water it's possible to really get a good rhythm going and swim very fast. I felt much faster on the way back, I guess I was conserving energy on the way out.
Post race
Warm down:

None, just got out and waited to see the other finishers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not having done this distance before, I just wasn't sure about my stamina.

Event comments:

After the race there was food (Fried chicken) but it took a long time to appear. The awards were the same for everybody and the officials accidently thought I had competed in the 5K and were stunned by my time until I told them that I was in the 2.5K race.

Suit: No wet suits, I wore jammers
Course: Start in the water just behind the beach's swim area barrier. Then a mass start. Swim out between two bouys about a quarter mile out and then across about a half mile of water to the next big bouy and back. The folks doing the 5000 meters went left at the second bouy into a cove. The finish was out of the water so you had to drag yourself upright and sprint across a timer.

I just saw your reply yesterday so I'm late getting back to you. The race was at Carters Lake in Cartersville Georgia. It's around 40 to 50 miles northwest of Atlanta. The park is beautiful and it was my first time there. It turns out that many Atlanta bikers go up there for group rides. I think there may also be a triathlon there but I'm not sure.

I hope you have a good, first season racing. I just finished my first tri of the season yesterday, it was the John Tanner Georgia Tri-the Parks race. I did the same race a year ago with not quite 2 months training (couch to triathlon, except that I was already swimming for a few months) and this year did the race over 8 minutes faster.
