Subject: How to modify my training plan.
I am following the BT, 20 week Sprint-3X Balanced training plan. My first tri is June 11th. I am starting week 3. Running is my weakest area. The tri I am training for has a 5.1 mile trail run vice the 3 mile goal of the training plan. Please advise me as to how you would modify this plan to better prepare for my first tri. One option is to just multiply all run sessions by 5/3's, but I suspect that is the wrong approach. Maybe not, though.

I think it wouldn't hurt to train for the run as if it was a 10K. Especially since it's a trail run.
You can take the run portions from an Olympic Training plan and use those. Also, for most,
the run is the harder/key part of the race. If you're ready for a 10K, an 8K will be cake and
you can push harder on the bike. Just my 2 cents.

These specific plans are designed for a back-of-pack athlete/beginner.  Do a time trial to assess your pace now and go to the plan and see how many miles you will cover near race day.  If you exceed it by at least 10%, I would say follow the plan.  If you will fall significantly short, then look at the run part of the analogous Oly-3X plan...if you can start week three of that in the running part comfortably, then replace the run part of the sprint with the oly.

If you can't do week 3 of the oly run part, start at week one or less and do the best you can not increasing your run by 10% a week.  Use the walk/run method on race day if needed if you couldn't safely get your run miles up.
